#242973 — Printjob produces FW error on HP CP1525nw

SubjectPrintjob produces FW error on HP CP1525nw
Message-ID<DtgnU-7f0-3@gated-at.bofh.it>
Hi,

I have sometimes a document causing an error 79 on my HP CP1525nw. According
to the user manual that means

The product has experienced an internal firmware error.

I am printing using cups and IPP, printers.conf contains:

DeviceURI tea4cups:/http://hpljwlan:631/ipp/

An example document which causes this problem is

http://bokomoko.de/~rd/2021_7-9_11_Runde-ins-Dreieckige_Vorlage.pdf

If I import the document in gimp and print it in gimp it certainly prints
without any issue.

I am wondering if cups comes with an option to "help" the printer by rewriting
the document to a "safe" format before sending it to the printer.

Any hint or advice is welcome.

Many thanks
Rainer

Hi,

I changed the model for printer from

postscript-hp:3/ppd/hplip/HP/hp-laserjet_cp1520_series-ps.ppd

to

hplip:0/ppd/hplip/HP/hp-color_laserjet_cp1518ni-pcl3.ppd

which made the document printing which caused the internal firmware error in
the printer before. Both seem to be just close to CP1525nw, but no full match.

I will observe if it has side effects in future.

What I do not understand yet:

hplip has a huge list of supported printers:

https://developers.hp.com/hp-linux-imaging-and-printing/supported_devices/
index

"HP LaserJet Professional cp1525nw" is even twice in there and it says it is
fully supported since hplip 3.11.3

I have 3.18.12+dfsg0-2 on my buster cups server, but

# lpinfo -m |grep 1525

produces no output.

How do I find out for my printer which is the correct cups printer model?

Thanks
Rainer

According to HP the cp1520 series has an AirPrint facility:

  https://support.hp.com/us-en/document/ish_2843711-2427128-16

This means you should be able to use the everywhere model with a network
connection. Give

  avahi-browse -rt _ipp._tcp

avahi-browse is in the avahi-utils package.

I tried the everywhere model by creating a printer queue

root@home:~# lpadmin -p HP-everywhere -E -v ipp://hpljwlan/ipp/print -m
everywhere

But the result is the same, an internal firmware error in the printer.

So far only the pcl3 ppd hp-color_laserjet_cp1518ni-pcl3.ppd did not run into
the issue.

"hp-laserjet_cp1520_series-ps.ppd" looks just right to me.

Did you compared current firmware version of your printer with the
available firmware update on HP support site?
https://support.hp.com/us-en/drivers/selfservice/hp-laserjet-pro-cp1525-color-printer-series/4052975/model/4052979

In general it's a good idea to keep firmware up-to-date and it might fix
your issue.
The only difficulty you might face is the firmware update is available
for Windows OS only.
If you don't have any Windows PCs you can create KVM/QEMU virtual
machine, install evaluation version of Windows 10 on it and redirect
printer to VM by using USB Host Device function.
I've updated firmware of another make\model printer using this method
without any issues.

Thanks for your reply.

The firmware is quite old 20140616, but that is also the current version on the
HP site, you reference.

hp-laserjet_cp1520_series-ps.ppd at least seems to cause the internal firmware
error :-/

Not according to the manual I'm reading, which tells us error 79 means
"an incompatible DIMM is installed." You must mean error 49, I guess.

For that error, the remedy is

Turn the product off, wait at least 30 seconds, and then turn the
product on and wait for it to initialize.
If you are using a surge protector, remove it. Plug the product
directly into the wall socket. Turn the product power on.

Hmm..after rereading the user manual, error 79 show up two times, i.e. the
Number+Text seems to be relevant:

79 Error
Turn off then on

The product has experienced an
internal firmware error.

Turn the product power off, wait
at least 30 seconds, and then turn
the product power on and wait for
it to initialize.
If you are using a surge protector,
remove it. Plug the product
directly into the wall socket. Turn
the product power on.
If the message persists, contact
HP support.

AND

79 Service error

(and the rest is identical to what you quote)

I see the firste one, 79 Error not 79 Service error

Here is the user guide I downloaded:

Oops, you're right, there're two errors numbered 79, a service error as
well as a plain old "error" error with no service. Why anyone would go
to the trouble of numbering errors only to give two discrete errors the
selfsame number might be a subject of reflection. Maybe they ran out of
numbers. Is that possible in a human lifetime? Of course, the errors
where the corresponding numbers have a decimal point followed by maybe
not exactly an arbitrary number of Xs (50.X, 54.XX) are equally
confounding. Maybe the Xs are placeholders for decimal parts like
"50.6" or "54.15," indicating errors too arcane for the hoi polloi and
truly understood uniquely by the top-level techs.

Anyway, all this merely serves to confirm my feeling that I don't really
understand anything (or at least to understand any number of even
trivial things requires a study and attention I'm unwilling to provide).

Good luck.

Let's see how well my workaround works. It's good that it is documented here,
I am sure I am not the only one running into this problem. I assume in the
best case it is a ghostscript bug, which produces invalid postscript, which
just affects (the version in) Debian.

Thanks for looking into this obscure issue
