Something got really messed up during the upgrade. There are broken dependencies and some packages (like some vim addon) don't work at all. Vim, for instance is unusable. I have tried all the dpkg/apt/apt-get commands to fix broken dependencies, broken packages, etc, and they all return without error now [1], but aptitude starts "resolving dependencies" and it soon uses up all the available RAM, then all the available swap and the system slows down (thrashing) and then freezes. Earlier on, I fixed /etc/apt/sources.list and the apt/apt-get/dpkg commands installed and removed some packages, but now it's at a steady state where there are no errors according to these commands. I've tried this operation (the same HD) on a system with 8 GB RAM (the original system), one with 16 GB and one with 32 GB. Same result. I've even tried: debsums -cs Find which packages contain the corrupt files. Returns a list of packages. debsums -c | xargs -rd '\n' -- dpkg -S | cut -d : -f 1 | sort -u Reinstall the damaged packages: xargs -rd '\n' -a <(sudo debsums -c | xargs -rd '\n' -- dpkg -S | cut -d : -f 1 | sort -u) -- sudo apt-get install -f --reinstall -- Check if no corrupt files remain. Should return no output if everything ok. debsums -c If config files have changed, this will show them. debsums -as But debsums -cs didn't return anything, so apparently nothing is corrupt, at least as far as apt/dpkg/apt-get are concerned. Apparently, the apt/dpkg/apt-get sub-systems don't find the problems. Aptitude knows there's something wrong but can't fix it. What can I do to make aptitude finish resolving dependencies and fix the broken packages? Where can I look for hints? Help please! Augustine [1] I've tried all the steps specified here: https://www.makeuseof.com/how-to-find-and-fix-broken-packages-on-linux/ https://linuxhint.com/apt_get_fix_missing_broken_packages/ and more. After so many tries, the same set of dpkg/apt/apt-get commands are repeated on multiple web sites.

Did you try `dpkg --audit`? Kind regards, Andrei -- http://wiki.debian.org/FAQsFromDebianUser

I have tried 'aptitude search '-b' and it returns a list of broken packages. I have manually removed a few and am now down to 51 broken packages, but I'm afraid that even if I remove all the broken packages, aptitude is still going to behave the same way while attempting to resolve all the dependencies and never finish. What would be nice is some command that would install the dependencies of the broken packages, but would that get into the same loop of resolving dependencies that never finishes? > Kind regards, > Andrei > -- > http://wiki.debian.org/FAQsFromDebianUser Thanks for replying. Try checking the output of:
dpkg -l | grep -v ^ii
In case there are any packages listed, depending on their state, it
should be possible to download them manually and install with `dpkg -i`.
Kind regards,
Andrei

After many iterations of installing, autoremoving, updating and upgrading, some packages were installed along with their dependencies, but I'm also getting: E; Packae '<package name>' has no installation candidate or <package name> is alerady the newest version (<version number>) dpkg -l | grep -v ^ii | wc -l 209 Which is lower than before, but aptitude still runs for hours resolving dependencies and exhausts RAM and swap. The remaining lines begin with 'ri' and 'rc'. I will keep trying and again boot this disk on the machine with 32GB RAM. Hopefully with fewer broken packages and dependencies, it will complete. > > Kind regards, > Andrei > -- > http://wiki.debian.org/FAQsFromDebianUser Thanks for replying. Augustine

With aptitude you might want to try running
aptitude keep-all
> The remaining lines begin with

The 'rc' packages shouldn't be a problem (see the header of the output
of an explanation of the flags) and getting rid of them should be as
simple as
aptitude purge '?config-files'
The 'ri' means 'dpkg' thinks they are installed, but remove was
requested.
If you still need them try downloading the .deb files and passing them
to `dpkg -i` otherwise pass the list to one of `apt purge`,
`aptitude purge` or `dpkg --purge`.
Or it might be taken care of by `aptitude keep-all` ;)
Hope this helps,
Andrei

I think there's more to it than that. For example, kdesudo shows up in the list with an 'rc', kopete with 'ic' (the only one with that). Both give the same "has no installation candidate" error when I attempt to 'apt-get install kdesudo | kopete'. They cannot be installed with apt-get install <package> either. Even though I did apg-get install kde-full and it installed lots of packages that should have been there, kopete and kdesudo are not in /var/cache/apt/archives and they show in aptitude with a 'c' in the first column and aptitude cannot be told to install them. Mmm... searching packages.debian.org shows that kopete and kdesudo are not available in 11/bullseye (kopete only in stretch, buster and experimental), so that explains that. > The 'ri' means 'dpkg' thinks they are installed, but remove was > requested. > > If you still need them try downloading the .deb files and passing them > to `dpkg -i` otherwise pass the list to one of `apt purge`, > `aptitude purge` or `dpkg --purge`. Thanks for all the help. Turns out that at least those 2 packages, and possibly more cannot be found because they're no longer in the release. I might have other issues, but at least aptitude is useable now, so I can do whatever cleanup I need to do. > Or it might be taken care of by `aptitude keep-all` ;) That did the trick.
