I just got interested in Telegraph as a possible comm thing to complement
to (or replacement for) email for my college class.

Does anyone know of a decent tech book or other resource describing it?

Thanks.

-Tom

P.S. I also just noticed Debian has some Telegraph interfaces I will look
into.

Telegram, sorry. My dad was a telegraph operator for a railroad in the old
days.

Hi Tom,

You want to use Telegram messaging instead of e-mail for your college
class? That's no problem at all. Just install "telegram-desktop" package
in your system and register an account. Make sure you use Telegram
version 3.1.1 (from Bullseye Backports) or newer (when using Testing, or
Sid). Older versions (in Buster and before) are not supported any more,
server-side.
You can create a group and add your students. There is no "tech book" or
resources to read, because it's so easy. If you fail to create a group,
just ask one of your students I am sure they will be happy to do that in
like 2 minutes.

Well, the interfaces I've seen don't look very organized (I should
look at the Deb app before I comment). I also want to automate
read-only, outgoing msgs when I update my website.

Note I meant to say "classmates" who are in their late 70s mostly, and
a few in their early 80s. I would say at least a quarter of them
aren't techy regarding smartphones and modern apps. Some have to
struggle with spreadsheets, and our brains are slowing down, so I need
to approach this carefully. That's why I want to do some more
research.

Apparently there is a second edition of one of the Python cookbooks
that discusses automating Telegram, so I was hoping to find a Debian
user familiar with it to see if it's worth buying.

Thanks, Piotr, I will have to do some work with my Buster
laptop--perhaps it's time to upgrade.

Blessings,

-Tom

Telegram Desktop interface is very well organized (not by default). Just
make sure to enable folders, to separate groups, channels, contacts,
non-contacts, bots etc. to separate folders. This is client-side
setting. Make life easier to heavy telegram user.

In that case I can't help I think. If it's people in their 70-80s, I'd
stick to e-mail solution, they are most likely more familiar with it,
and totally unfamiliar with Telegram. They will be completely lost
there, don't they?

I am still not sure what you want to automate on Telegram, when to my
understanding that will be some read-only (channel) or low-frequency
(group) chat with few people in their 70-80s.

Sure :) When you upgrade do Bullseye, make sure you enable
bullseye-backports repository and install Telegram via "sudo apt install
telegram-desktop -t bullseye-backports", otherwise it won't work,
version in main repository has been obsoleted server-side. Once you
install Telegram from backports, it will be updating itself nicely
alongside with rest of the system.

I think he wants to automatically send out messages into that
channel/group when some event happens on his system/website. I have no
idea how so make that work.

That is correct. When I publish a news item, currently the act of sending
the updated home page to my server also sends out a tweet. I would like to
add an IM to the mix for those with IM-capable phones.

You should said that in the beginning. I do that in Telegram. I have my
channels and bots, where scripts post things.
You want to do that in python. It's very easy. You can have your first
bot in maybe 30 minutes, that include learning from zero level. There is
plenty of tutorials, look:

Even if Telegram has a Libre implementation, it still relies on
centralized servers operated by a private entity hoping to make profit.
For this kind of use case, I strongly urge to rather use something that
enables you to run your own servers.

The obvious answer for this is XMPP, aka Jabber. Installing a server on
Debian is very easy with the prosody package.

The Matrix project is supposed to be some kind of successor and
extension. In theory it looks very promising: syncing conversations
between devices and other interesting features. But last summer I tried
installing a server with the packages in Testing and it just did not
work, some kind of --generate-keys option was silently ignored and then
the server refused to start for lack of keys, so I did not experiment
further, but I intend to.

Regards,

I am also interested in the Matrix project. I also couldn't get a
server running on Bullseye this summer. I will be interested in your
progress.
