It seems the drivers are there, my problems are:
1. I can't use gaussian view
2. The Sweet Home 3D Error: Sweet Home 3D will exit now because of a fatal
error in the 3D rendering system of your computer. Please update the
DirectX/OpenGL drivers of your computer graphic card.
Thanks again, lina

Can I have a system with both X-session and the nvidia-driver as gaussian view requires Gaussview must be run in an X-windows session. Wayland, with a "d". This is also true for Debian 10 (buster).

Installing GNOME in order to use Wayland instead of X, when your error message says that you need X, doesn't sound like a helpful idea. I've never used an nvidia card myself, so I don't have first-hand experience with them. From what I understand, the process of getting graphics to work properly with nvidia goes something like this: 1) Install Debian. 2) Install firmware if needed. This may make the nouveau driver work acceptably, or it may not. If the nouveau driver with firmware works well enough for your needs, stop here. 3) Identify which card you have, and therefore which driver you need. There's more than one proprietary nvidia driver version. 4) Install the desired nvidia driver, which involves building a kernel module from an out-of-tree source package, which means installing the kernel headers which match your running kernel(s), and so on. 5) Bl(a|o)cklist the nouveau driver if necessary. I'm not sure if this step is still required. 5.5) (Optional) Offer prayers and/or sacrifices to appropriate deities. 6) Reboot. 7) Start X and see what happens.

Manual activities in steps 4 and 5 are quite well handled by the package nvidia-driver (and it's legacy variants) in Debian non-free. But I read from her other posts that the latest proprietary driver which Debian ships is already installed and according to command line tools is supposed to work. As xfce currently does not support it, the problem is probably also not related to wayland.

I've installed SweetHome3D on my system with Nvidia VGA to see if this program would work for me. When I tried to start it using "./SweetHome3D" I got the same message about "DirectX/OpenGL drivers", which is false. But when I start SweetHome3D using "./SweetHome3D-Java3D-1_5_2" it runs and works without problems, AFAICS. > > Thanks again, lina > > # glxinfo -B > name of display: :0.0 > display: :0 screen: 0 > direct rendering: Yes > Memory info (GL_NVX_gpu_memory_info): > Dedicated video memory: 2048 MB > Total available memory: 2048 MB > Currently available dedicated video memory: 1718 MB > OpenGL vendor string: NVIDIA Corporation > OpenGL renderer string: GeForce GT 730/PCIe/SSE2 > OpenGL core profile version string: 4.6.0 NVIDIA 460.91.03 > OpenGL core profile shading language version string: 4.60 NVIDIA > OpenGL core profile context flags: (none) > OpenGL core profile profile mask: core profile > > OpenGL version string: 4.6.0 NVIDIA 460.91.03 > OpenGL shading language version string: 4.60 NVIDIA > OpenGL context flags: (none) > OpenGL profile mask: (none) > > OpenGL ES profile version string: OpenGL ES 3.2 NVIDIA 460.91.03 > OpenGL ES profile shading language version string: OpenGL ES GLSL ES 3.20 It looks like Nvidia driver is installed and working correctly. -- With kindest regards, Alexander. ⢀⣴⠾⠻⢶⣦⠀ ⣾⠁⢠⠒⠀⣿⡁ Debian - The universal operating system ⢿⡄⠘⠷⠚⠋⠀ https://www.debian.org ⠈⠳⣄⠀⠀⠀⠀
