One of my memory slot has died, so I am running a Thinkpad with 2GB ram only. I have been told that, even if I put a 4GB ram module in, it won't be as fast as 2x2GB ram (true? Stop me here if I am wrong). Never mind put an 8GB stick; it might not even work. At the moment I'm running a heavily hacked LMDE4 (Buster) with a lot of Mint customisations off. What flavour of Debian should I replace my LMDE4 with? And does it make any difference? My memory hogs are Chromium and Firefox, the rest is ok. Thanks, merci, grazie. -- Ottavio Caruso A: Because it messes up the order in which people normally read text. Q: Why is top-posting such a bad thing? A: Top-posting. Q: What is the most annoying thing in e-mail?

AFAIK yes, your machine may be faster with 2x2GB than with 1x4GB, but
the difference will depend a lot on the specific application and I'd
expect that in most cases you won't notice it unless you actively try to
measure it. Whether 2GB+4GB would be faster or slower than 2x2GB will
depend even more on the application. I'd go with the "more RAM" option
because the worse slowdown you might experience just because the RAMs
aren't paired is much less than the slowdown you experience when the
machine needs to swap for lack of RAM.
If I were you I'd check with something like thinkwiki what the machine
can take and upgrade it to as much RAM you can (within technical and
financial limits).

I occasionally use a 1GB laptop (Thinkpad X30) with XFCE4 and Debian
stable, and regularly use a 3GB laptop (Thinkpad T60) with XFCE4 and
Debian testing. I can't give a reliable estimate, but my guess is that
2GB should be enough that running a more lightweight desktop environment
than what you have will not make a significant difference. The memory
hogs you mention will still eat all your memory anyway.

What model/ part number is the Thinkpad?
What make/ model/ part number is the processor?
What make/ model/ part number are the hard disk(s) and/or solid state
drives?

What make/ model/ part number are the memory module(s)?

If the motherboard, chipset, CPU, GPU, etc., support multiple memory
channels ("dual channel" is common) and you install the correct memory
modules (e.g. "matched pair"), connected hardware will be able to access
memory banks in parallel and the computer will perform better (less
latency, more throughput) . You want that; the effect is noticeable.
> Never mind put an 8GB stick; it might not even work.
The technical manual for your computer should tell you what memory
modules are supported. As another reader suggested, you might want to
"max it out" by installing the biggest, fastest supported memory modules
in every available memory slot.

I recommend the network install image of Debian Stable:
https://cdimage.debian.org/debian-cd/current/amd64/iso-cd/
debian-11.2.0-amd64-netinst.iso
Be sure to download a checksum file (e.g. SHA256SUMS) and verify the
checksum of the ISO file after downloading. If you want to be extra
careful, download the checksum signature file (e.g. SHA256SUMS.sign) and
verify the signature.
Burn the ISO to a fast USB flash drive. Verify the checksum of the
burned image before booting (one booted, the Debian installer may write
to the USB flash drive and the checksum will no longer match).
If you select "Install" at the Debian Installer main menu, you should be
able to choose among various desktop environments (I run Xfce). If you
select "expert", you should have even more control. It is also possible
to install additional login managers, window managers, desktop
environments, etc., at a later time.

Agreed here: no need to create more electronic junk if the system still
works well enough.

1.8GHz is disappointingly slow for a 2012 system, but I spend most of my
time working on 2GHz machines of the Core2 era and rarely miss the extra
speed of my more modern systems, so that's probably no strong reason to
replace the machine.
[ Obviously, that depends on your usage pattern. ]

Here I must admit that I wouldn't be able to work with such a runt screen.

As is surprisingly frequent, the official spec from Lenovo says the max
is 8GB even though the above says the max is actually 16GB.
That's probably because the 8GB SODIMMs were not available yet when the
machine was released even tho the hardware already supported them.
In any case, a quick look suggests 8GB of DDR3-1600MHz SODIMMs will set
you back about $50. Depending on the use you make of the machine and
your budget, $25 will get you 4GB which together with the 2GB you
already have will get you 6GB which should be quite sufficient.
If you're thrifty you might even be able to find such a 4GB SODIMM for
free by asking some friends (it's considered old enough that people may
have such parts lying around not used any more).

If and when the other memory socket goes bad, you will be in a tough situation. It would be better to get a working computer now, install Debian, migrate your data, and then recycle the E130. Used equipment is a much better value than new equipment. I prefer computers with Xeon processors, integrated graphics, and ECC memory. Rack mount servers can be found on eBay starting around US$100 (you provide the HDD/SSD and Debian): https://www.ebay.com/sch/175698/i.html?_nkw=xeon+ecc&_sop=15 Entry-level tower servers with Xeon E3 v5 processors and Intel integrated graphics start around US$200, and also work well as desktop machines (again, you provide the HDD/SSD and Debian): https://www.ebay.com/sch/i.html?_nkw=xeon+e3-1225+v5+tower&_sop=15 David

My 1st chromebook(codename: alex)[0] have only 2GB ram. At that time (in 2016), i did install Ubuntu 12.04 LTS via Crouton[1] at there the chromebook. It was not bad.
