Greetings all; Got yet another CF, repo has missing -dev packages, specifically openssl-dev for its includes including openssl/bio.h. can't make a kernel without it. ncurses-dev is also missing so I can't use make menuconfig, and had to install 49 pkgs just to do a make xconfig. No cheers, Gene

Gene, if I only knew whether this is a request for help or just letting of steam, I'd try to be helpful ;-) As it is, I'll just try to leave one hint here (which, see above, might be misplaced). What you're looking for is called libssl-dev, which you could have easily fourd out by doing an apt-file search openssl/bio.h Remember: apt-file is your friend! > No cheers, Gene Cheers -- t

I spent at least an hour scrolling around to no avail when synaptics->search didn't find it. WTH? Does apt-file update (cuz its cache was empty) use a different set of repo's? I always thought a synaptics->reload did exactly the same thing? /me goes off scratching what little hair I have left. Tace care and stay well. I always thought a synaptics->reload did exactly the same thing? No, it shouldn't. And, if I read you above correctly, apt-file and apt do agree. Why synaptic doesn't I don't know (but I know pretty little about synaptic, anyway). Cheers -- t

What isn't clear (to me) is whether Gene looked for it again with synaptic after the update that apt-get called for....

*sigh*
unicorn:~$ apt-get -s install libssl-dev
NOTE: This is only a simulation!
apt-get needs root privileges for real execution.
Keep also in mind that locking is deactivated,
so don't depend on the relevance to the real current situation!
Reading package lists... Done
Building dependency tree... Done
Reading state information... Done
Suggested packages:
libssl-doc
The following NEW packages will be installed:
libssl-dev
0 upgraded, 1 newly installed, 0 to remove and 0 not upgraded.
Inst libssl-dev (1.1.1k-1+deb11u1 Debian:11.2/stable, Debian-Security:11/stable-security [amd64])
Conf libssl-dev (1.1.1k-1+deb11u1 Debian:11.2/stable, Debian-Security:11/stable-security [amd64])
Instead of asking us, "Hey guys, I'm trying to install openssl-dev, but
there's no package by that name. What's the correct name in Debian?" you
just jump to the conclusion that the "repo has missing -dev packages".
This is part of the reason why you keep having problems, I suspect.

Same story, wash rinse repeat for ncurses-dev. apt just installed it, AFTER apt-file refreshed its cache, synaptic- >reload(ed) several times could not find it, even hand scrolling thru the lib listings, So 'splain to me why synaptic, fully reloaded, could not find either of those packages??? I wasted hours hand scrolling thru the listings and I couldn't find them, and niether could synaptic. But apt- file complained of an empty cache, and when updated found them both exactly where I and synaptic was looking.
