#244819 — sparse dictionary

From"Russell L. Harris" <russell@rlharris.org>

Subjectsparse dictionary
Message-ID<DLon0-2Ey-3@gated-at.bofh.it>
With respect to the dictionary and thesaurus, something has changed
between Debian releases 9 and 11; it seems that a great many words are
missing. The problem is not spelling; the spelling checker reports
"correctly spelled".

Synaptic no longer shows the several "gazeteer" entries, and I do not
find "moby thesaurus".

In default search method I have selected local host, and localhost for
the server. I need the ability to use the system when not connected
to the Internet.

Is the current revision of the dictionary application unable to read
all of the old databases?

My synaptic (0.90.2) cannot find it. Debian 11.2.

What is "gazeteer"? Is that an Ubuntu thing? (This is not an Ubuntu
mailing list.)

Well... according to packages.debian.org, dict-moby-thesaurus only exists
in oldstable and oldoldstable. So, Debian 9 and 10.

<https://tracker.debian.org/pkg/dict-moby-thesaurus> shows the dates
it was removed from unstable and from testing.

<https://tracker.debian.org/news/1161371/removed-10-64-from-unstable/>
shows that it was removed because:

RoQA; dead upstream (10+ years); python2-only; no extrenal deps; extremely low popcon

Thanks for taking the time to trace out the cause. It truly is a sad
loss.

I wish I knew enough about Python to know how much work it would take
to make the data base compatible with Python 3 (or whatever dictionary
currently is running on). Meanwhile, it is back to Roget.

Speaking as someone who took a Python 2 codebase (moosic) that was being
dropped with the move to Python 3, and updated it to work with Python 3,
without having been more than can-read-it-well-enough familiar with
Python before that point:

It's entirely doable, but the degree of difficulty and amount of work
will depend on the specific codebase involved.

In my case, I started with the last Debian package version before the
removal, imported the source package into git, dropped the debian/
directory because that doesn't belong in the upstream codebase, ran the
'2to3' tool (from the package of the same name) against the codebase,
committed the result, and started doing "build" / run tests of the
updated code (including comparisons back and forth with the untouched
Python 2 version of the codebase).

Lots of things didn't work at first, but it only took me a day or so to
get it working far enough for a few of the program's features to be
functional, and another day or two to get the rest into shape. I've
since taken over as upstream maintainer, am working to get the package
back into Debian (although it's currently low project priority), and
have done a bit of work adding features and fixing bugs into the bargain.

The details in your case might be significantly different, but I assure
you that it *can* be done, it's just a matter of how opaque the codebase
is, and how many manual changes need to be made after what the 2to3
conversion tool does.

FWIW, here are my notes from converting a couple small private scripts:

  * Note that 2to3 does not change the shebang line. And the actual
    command in Debian10 [and 11] is 2to3-2.7.

  * Run pylint before running 2to3, and address non-cosmetic issues. Then
    run pylint3 after the conversion.

This is in the 'python2.7' package. However, there is also a package
named '2to3', which contains a command by the same name.

I cannot actually remember which of the two I used.

I don't think I did either of these things. I will have to follow up
with the latter, to make sure things are as clean as I can arrange for
them to be.

Ah, I see. Both the files in /usr/bin are trivial wrappers, with
2to3-2.7 using the Python 2.7 library and 2to3 using the Python 3
library. I expect that 2to3 would be the better choice (/me updates
notes).

Reading state information... Done
dict-moby-thesaurus is already the newest version (1.0-6.4)

If you still have access to a repository that contains it (that is, if
'apt-cache policy dict-moby-thesaurus' reports a remote location, not
just /var/lib/dpkg/status), then you can download the source package
with the command:

apt-get source dict-moby-thesaurus

(although you'll want to make sure you're in an appropriate empty
directory before running the command, just to keep things clean).

Note also that a brief examination of the binary package doesn't seem to
show any indication of a Python connection at all, much less
specifically a Python 2 one, so I'm not sure what it is that will need
to be changed here.

If you don't still have access to such a repository, then you'll need to
look under snapshot.debian.org, and find the source package there.

The main page will be

https://snapshot.debian.org/binary/dict-moby-thesaurus/

and the version-specific page for the latest version appears to be

https://snapshot.debian.org/package/dict-moby-thesaurus/1.0-6.4/

; at a glance, it looks like turning these files into a form that you
can work with may wind up requiring more Debian-specific knowledge than
the other approach would, but I can't confirm offhand that that is the
case.

The source package description [1] says:

Build-Depends-Indep: python (>= 2.4.3), python-dictdlib (>= 2.0.4),

so it looks like it uses Python to make the binary package.

The description includes... "This is formatted for use by the
dictionary server in the dictd package"

So I'd guess that if you had dict/disctd installed you could use just
intsal dict-moby-thesaurus from Debian 10 and it would work. No python2
needed.

Which in turn implies that what needs to be forward-ported is probably
that python-dictdlib, whatever and wherever that is (it doesn't seem to
be in current Debian testing, which would be expected if it is indeed
Python-2-only, and I haven't taken the trouble to dig it up from the
snapshots archive as of yet), as well as any dependencies that may have.

I think it likely that with that done, dict-moby-thesaurus could be
built from its existing source package with no issues.q

I think this lappy has only had Bullseye in testing and then stable on
it Debian GNU/Linux 11 (bullseye)

i   dict-moby-thesaurus

Maybe just not in synaptic. I use apt-get and apt to put the packages
on this one?

No idea though.

No, you're definitely mistaken about one of your assumptions here. There
isn't a separate repository of packages that only synaptic knows about,
or that only apt-get knows about. They all read the same sources.

The most likely thing is that you ran bullseye-as-testing at a time
when this package still existed (hadn't been removed from testing
yet). You installed the package then, and you still have it.

I'm not sure what needs compilation, but let me admit that I'm not
familiar with dictds and how they're used.

$ dpkg -L dict-moby-thesaurus
/.
/usr
/usr/share
/usr/share/dictd
/usr/share/dictd/moby-thesaurus.dict.dz
/usr/share/dictd/moby-thesaurus.index
/usr/share/doc
/usr/share/doc/dict-moby-thesaurus
/usr/share/doc/dict-moby-thesaurus/aaREADME.txt.gz
/usr/share/doc/dict-moby-thesaurus/changelog.Debian.gz
/usr/share/doc/dict-moby-thesaurus/copyright
$

moby-thesaurus.dict.dz is a compressed text file that you can gunzip
if only you change .dz to .gz. Similarly:

$ dpkg -L dict-gazetteer2k-counties
/.
/usr
/usr/share
/usr/share/dictd
/usr/share/dictd/gazetteer2k-counties.dict.dz
/usr/share/dictd/gazetteer2k-counties.index
/usr/share/doc
/usr/share/doc/dict-gazetteer2k-counties
/usr/share/doc/dict-gazetteer2k-counties/changelog.Debian.gz
/usr/share/doc/dict-gazetteer2k-counties/copyright
$

… gazetteer2k-counties.dict.dz is likewise, and the indexes
are all text anyway.

$ cp -ip /usr/share/dictd/gazetteer2k-counties.dict.dz /tmp/gazetteer2k-counties.dict.dz.gz
$ gunzip /tmp/gazetteer2k-counties.dict.dz.gz
$ head -n 20 /tmp/gazetteer2k-counties.dict.dz

BTW python 2.7 is included in bullseye, isn't it? The restriction
AIUI is that packages can only depend on it for building, not running.
(Not that I know where python comes into all of this.)

Cheers,
David.
