If you MUST upgrade to a newer branch, then read up on how Debian's release cycle works, read up on how the bug tracking system works, do some basic research on known issues in the current testing and/or unstable branches, and proceed with caution upon upgrading. Direct installation of unstable is NEVER a supported operation. If it happens to work in any given month, wonderful. As it turns out, it does not work right now. So stop trying to do it.

The mini.iso should connect to a known, secure Debian archive. The "web" is a fuzzy concept. > > Because I don't need a full-blown system - I need a bare minimum.. The netinst ISO can give the bare minimum. Have you tried a Daily mini.iso yet? 10 minutes of your time. -- Brian.

The normal way one does this is: 1) Download the "netinst" installer image, or the "netinst with non-free firmware" installer image if you plan to use Wifi or X or Wayland. 2) Burn the image to a CD, a DVD, or a USB stick. 3) Boot the installer. Install Debian stable. Select "Standard", which will have the basic operating system but no GUI stuff. 4) Reboot into Debian. Make sure everything works. 5) Upgrade to testing or unstable if required for your particular task. 6) Install a GUI if you want one. Install whatever else you want. I've been using Debian for a few decades now and I've *never* installed testing or unstable directly, and I've never used a file named "mini.iso" either.

With no networking, the mini installer will make a bare minimum installation from its build-in micro-repository. All packages will be as of the date of the CD, of course. If that bare minimum gives you enough to reboot and set up the network, you can go from there, manually installing whatever else you wish. If that bare minimum doesn't give you enough, you have some finagling to do. If you need firmware to reboot, install with the "unofficial" mini which includes firmware. -- Does anybody read signatures any more? https://charlescurley.com https://charlescurley.com/blog/

Hi, guys, I am downloading a stable release for amd64 from https://www.debian.org/distrib/netinst#smallcd, and will follow with changing it to Sid. I hope everything will work out fine. Thank you. Hi, ALL, As said I downloaded and successfully installed the full blown Debian latest stable. I then edit the repository file to point it to the Sid. Then I successfully fetched the new (Sid) repository. However, trying to run an update I hit a problem. The command fetched the packages successfully, but the next step: is stuck at 37%. I will check tonight if it will continue. Thank you. I think this is the first time I've ever seen that advice. Traditionally, going directly from stable to unstable has always been a "supported" path, insofar as unstable has any kind of support at all. (All support for unstable is of course unofficial and provided on a volunteer basis.) > Initial small stable == minimal number of packages as a basis to work from. > > Upgrade to testing [will eventually be Debian 12 - codename bookworm > == kernel and libraries update to a probably working testing. > > Upgrade to unstable == sid == never released, continuously in development > == upgrade of minimal numbers of packages, then install the rest (and be > prepared to help debug breakages) That's fine too. The jump from testing to unstable should be pretty small. > > The command fetched the packages successfully, but the next step: is > > stuck at 37%. > > You may have hit a situation where the upgrade path isn't successful. > Maybe repeat the install of stable and try again? Sounds more like a network glitch to me. Either the mirror stopped responding for some reason, or the ISP's routers decided to take a restroom break, or the (wireless?) interface on the local Debian system has decided to take up a career as a paperweight. Reinstalling stable is not what I'd suggest here. "Wait a minute and try again" would be a good first step. "See if you can reach other things on the Internet" would rule out some of the possible reasons.

The mini.iso doesn't even contain the whole installer, it must download more components via the internet. It definitely doesn't contain any debs (as opposed to other small-isch images like the netinst). It's primary use case is for PXE installations, but because it so small it has other unique properties that no other images has. Kind regards, Andrei -- http://wiki.debian.org/FAQsFromDebianUser

The Getting Debian page does not mention any mini iso. https://www.debian.org/distrib/ Am I missing something here? Where, if it exists, is the mini iso documented? -- Does anybody read signatures any more? https://charlescurley.com https://charlescurley.com/blog/

The first place I found it mentioned is here: https://wiki.debian.org/DebianUnstable#Installation It's the LAST option listed in this section. I've never used it before in my entire life. I've never seen it suggested before. I wouldn't even be able to tell you what's on it, or how to use it. And yet, I refer you to Bashphorism #6: When given a choice of solutions, the newbie will always choose the wrong one.

It just an easiest and fastest way to install Sid I think whoever made the decision to provide this mini.iso is an amazing guy. However, it needs to be documented better in regards to the "SID" install. Thank you. > > > > Add something about old hands occasionally doing the same. It's a wiki, please do feel free to improve it as you find solutions. Have you tried the daily image yet? Specifically for your particular use-case (installing sid) it should be better suited. The Getting Debian page does not > mention any mini iso. https://www.debian.org/distrib/ It's on the Debian Installer pages, specifically under "other images (netboot, USB stick, etc.)": https://www.debian.org/releases/stable/debian-installer/ (substitute 'stable' with the code name to download installers for specific releases) This is the official page for the development (testing) version of the Debian Installer. For installing unstable/sid the daily images are probably better than a 'stable' image. https://www.debian.org/devel/debian-installer/ > Am I missing something here?
