I'm reading various things lately (e.g., some Quora articles) in which, in Firefox, I see things like (that's a simple one): [math]R_0[/math] I'm trying to find out what that markup is named, and then how to interpret it. I've done some Googling and reading on Wikipedia, but so far no luck. Thanks for any explanations or hints!

That form of bracketing is not part of the mainstream of any mth model I'm aware of.
Usually it's {} or ().
I don't know what your aims are exactly, but it may pay to become familiar with LaTeX, which specialises in this.
Cheers!

Is it AsciiMath?
http://asciimath.org/#syntax
I've no idea if it is, but I found it in a list of math markup
languages, and what you've written corresponds to something valid
there.
Or it may just be a more general way to indicate R with subscript O.
Do other examples you see seem to be valid in AsciiMath?
Cheers,
Andy

The syntax scheme looks like "BB code" as used by e.g. Ubuntu forums
https://ubuntuforums.org/misc.php?do=bbcode
Nevertheless, that biotope is fragmented and "[math]" seems to be rarely
implemented. I see traces that it formats mathematical expressions
https://www.vb-paradise.de/index.php/Thread/77784-Welche-BBCodes-gibt-es-hier-im-Forum-zum-Einf%C3%A4rben-von-Quellcodes-Syntax-Highlig/
Translated quote:
"Mathematical Formula (MathML, TeX and ASCIImat):
\begin{pmatrix} x & y \\ z & v \end{pmatrix}
Usage: [math]\begin{pmatrix} x & y \\ z & v \end{pmatrix}[/math]"
You will probably have to study the help texts of the particular forum
to find out what source code format their "[math]" accepts.
Have a nice day :)
Thomas

Quora in particular uses a subset of LaTeX. Other comments I see in Quora state that MathJax is being used. I use this guide: https://math-on-quora.surge.sh when attempting to compose maths for Quora. For me, it Just Works™. I guess you're using more aggressive filtering and bocking than I do. -- Regards, Chris

Intentionally top posting: Thanks to all who replied. I think Chris hit the nail on the head (in many ways) -- now I have to read the link he sent and figure out what to change in my browser settings to see the rendered "math". In the meantime, the interactive renderer on http://asciimath.org/#syntax seems helpful -- I don't if it will render all the markup I encounter on Quora, but until I get Firefox settings straightened out, I'll be trying the renderer. Iirc, I keep Java and Javascript disabled (and also use NoScript), I'll have to see what I have to change, ideally only for Quora (or other pages with the same markup). I found that, in NoScript, I had to allow cloudfare.com and now that markup renders as "real" math equations.
