 Well, I am using:

$ uname -a
Linux Microknoppix 5.3.5-64 #16 SMP PREEMPT Wed Oct 23 02:08:38 CEST
2019 x86_64 GNU/Linux

which they say is based on buster. I will have to test the thing with
Debian and/or ask directly the knoppix folks.

And that's non-Debian kernel.

As far as userland is concerned - it may be so.
As we see, the kernel is different.

Try executing "/sbin/modinfo dm9601", it should show you if the device
in question is supported by your current kernel or not.

Well, it seems to be the case. So what might be the problem then?

Exactly this is considered inappropriate here, at this list.
First, the official language of debian-user is English.
Second, forum links are volatile, today they work, and tomorrow they do
not.

The essential thing that I saw there was:

eth1: <NO-CARRIER,BROADCAST,MULTICAST,UP> mtu 1500 qdisc pfifo_fast
state DOWN mode DEFAULT group default qlen 1000
link/ether 00:e0:4c:53:44:58 brd ff:ff:ff:ff:ff:ff

Which shows us that:

1) Either your Ethernet cable is damaged, or it simply is not connected
at other side. Or maybe you're trying to use cross-over Ethernet cable
instead of straight-through one, or vise versa. In short, OSI Layer 1
problem.
2) Or, advertised 100Mbps full-duplex Ethernet frames are simply not
being accepted by the other side. That's OSI Layer 2 problem.

I'd start with replacing the cable, followed by disabling autonegotiation,
and tinkering with full-duplex/half-duplex modes (ethtool), and as a
last resort I'd consider both kernel upgrade or replacing the faulty
device altogether.

For instance, ASIX AX8817X based USB-Ethernet converters simply work for
me, and even advertise 1Gbps (limited to 300Mbps in practice, of course).

Well, I found a Debien DVD

$ uname -a
Linux debian 4.9.0-6-amd64 #1 SMP Debian 4.9.82-1+deb9u3 (2018-03-02)
x86_64 GNU/Linux

and tried it to get the same result I was getting while using knoppix.

To me it was really about the cable or the connector, because all I
had to do was connecting the cable to a RJ45 port in the laptop to
access the Internet.

Depends on what you mean by here.

Does dm9601 need a firmware? No, modinfo says it plain and clear.
Does dm9601 need some other kernel modules to be loaded? Yes, it needs
usbnet, usbcore and mii, but both udev and modinfo take care of that.

So, basically, Linux is registering/handling that USB-RJ47 interface
fine. What could then be causing some sort of impedance? How can I
troubleshoot such issues more in depth to be able to determine to
which extent it depend on hw or sw?

I cannot add anything to what I wrote earlier.
If it's OSI Level 1 - tinker with cables.
If it's OSI Level 2 - ethtool is your friend.

Kernel module "dm9601" is built by Debian Kernel Team and should be
included at "linux-image-$(version)-$arch" package. As of stable, that
is.

That specific kernel module does not require any firmware.
