Hi !
I'm a photograph and user of Debian since.... something like Debian 5
but using Linux since 2006 or so. Much before this, but as full time and
without a Windows PC, that 2006.

I am planning to open a user group, with forums, place to share picture
and tips, video chat server (Jitsi or something alike) and more.

So this is a call to anyone interested.

I am not limiting to photograph using Debian but caring for people using
opensource software at large, with preferred operating system of Linux.

If some of you guys want to participate in the adventure then I invite
you to contact me. All operating fee (we got a 32 GB/2TB server, domain
name, SSL if needed and more) will be covered by me for now.

I believe if we have enough power, there could even be possibility to
process in the background some photos that take time (focus stacking)
and more. As this give me the idea of developing a framework for remote
treatment of photos, same like what is done in render farm for 3D render.

What is the state of photo editing software available on Linux?

My (admittedly dated) information is that while GIMP is "ok-ish", one
still needs Adobe Photoshop (and/or Lightroom?) for anything "serious"
(whatever that means).

Of the three persons I know that are serious about photography two are
using Windows and the other macOS.

The two Windows users are technically inclined power users and have used
Linux (or still do) for other purposes. As far as I know they didn't
find it very useful for photography.

(the macOS user is generally quite happy with it and the Apple ecosystem
in general, and is unlikely to even consider changing)

Kind regards,
Andrei

Yeah it might be better Polyna-Maude R.-Summerside invests in mirroring or
build server, but ... last time I replayed to his/her post, I got a harsh
answer (although I admit, I was jokingly unpolite ... Gnome :D :D :D )

I do not want to be unpolite, but 32GB/2TB is not very informative and does
nothing outrageous ... it might be something for own web page ... but
nothing soo useful for the public - it is just my estimate and I am not
related to Debian or whatever organization. Correct me if I am wrong - but
I believe everybody has more at home, although it does not say how many
cores (CPU power).

Perhaps it is better to donate the money to Debian.org or his/her favorite
Gnome :)

Hi,

Maybe you have too much free time and should start doing useful stuff.

I didn't ask your opinion about what to do.

And if I need to ask someone's opinion, for sure I wouldn't ask a guy
who say "You don't have enough resources to run a web server but go run
a Debian mirror".

Am I telling you what type of underwear to put on ? No, so let me manage
it as I want.

You seem much closer to a troll than anything useful if I look at the
type of message you write.

I really don't care if people have more at home or not.

What I can say is that I've hosted many site in my life, for corporate
clients and I know what resources are needed.

You may have more at home, but you are running multiple task and your
system is not optimized only for network connection.

And oh yes, I exactly said I was going to host web pages.

So if the best you can do is tell people down instead of encouraging
them, let me be assured you are a sad men.

I'm happy with systemd and what I don't really know about is devuan,
I've heard about a fork / fight / split when Debian went to systemd (I
think it was around Jessie - Stretch). Other than the two being runlevel
management system, I don't know the difference.

I'd rather make technological choices based on technological questions
but I'll take a look at the user groups and everything that goes around
Devuan.

I'll have to admit that it's a "no fun" situation when people act like
this. I've had to deal twice with this guy, one time he got into a
thread to say that "Gnome ain't part of the problem, Gnome is the
problem and that KDE is the same type of problem" but didn't have
anything to support his affirmation. I can argue, we can exchange
opinion but you need to have something to say, not just acting like we
all did in high school and doing telling other names.

I've used Debian for a long time and always saw it as one of the most
active community, with the most software and one of the biggest
developer base. Maybe it has change as time pass by... Possibly that all
the good work is getting hidden behind people who are so good that they
need to convince themselves by shouting how great they are.

You footnote talks about a book on troubleshooting. I've learned what we
call differential diagnostics when I was still in school (PhD / Master).
It's the technique used by doctors, mental health professional too that
allow us to get an idea of where the problem may be, each step getting
closer to the optimal cause, by using the most prominent cause and
pushing other possibility aside, one by one. Starting with the basis of
"it was going good then something change, now we have this problem" what
can it be, what can't it be, we often look at the most common cause and
rule it out at start...

If this interest you, maybe I still have some documents on the subject.

Hi Andrei,

Thanks for posting this tantalizing information.

Have your two Windows friends ever mentioned any specific task that was too
slow or too clumsy or otherwise too unsuitable for linux and/or gnu?

I'm very very ignorant of the field, but it seems like it would be useful
to collect a list of photography-software tasks that are currently easy or
possible in windows (or mac), and not easy or not possible in linux and/or
gnu. These would form something like "open problems for gnu/linux
photography", and an incomplete or even very sparse list could help us get
a sense of progress if any items could be ticked off.

Certainly not! Have you really missed darktable project since 10 years.
Since 1 or 2 years I would certainly call the project "serious" and
many professionals are using it daily. I'm using it since many years
and do prepare exhibitions only using darktable.

Thanks for this fast and nice answer.

Yes he possibly missed much or just talk without knowing (or searching).

I use Entangle ( a bit less), Darktable (a bit everyday) and GIMP (all
the time), plus Hugin and some scripts... Plus many utilities.

Yes Linux is serious for photography and a proof of that is the number
of software that got ported from Linux (Unix) to Windows/MacOS.

Like you answered yourself "serious" (whatever that means), I could say
the same thing about "state" of photo editing software.

There's a need to make a difference between those possibility :
1st : I don't want to use GIMP (or Darktable or Entangle or whatever
software) because I am used to a specific workflow and this would
require me much learning to change it or that I have work to do and this
would require me much time to get to a pace where I can make money.

2nd : The software is not able to do what I need.

The answer is much more closer to the 1st one than the 2nd.

But we also have to take into account one thing : Photography is not
only about technical but also an art.
So for some person, the possibility to use let say "Luminar" to process
sky and make them as they want is something they will not even think
about letting go.
In that case, your are in the same position as the person who needs a
Windows computer for a specific application that is custom made for
their trade, like a accounting program used to do medical billing with
Quebec provincial health care billing agency.

> Of the three persons I know that are serious about photography two are

Why don't you ask your two friend why are they so much in a need for
Windows. They'll give you their opinion, as this is a bit like politics.

I don't know if you do photography, but when I got into it, I understood
it was much like politics too. People will fight over opinion regarding
stuff as simple as UV filter are good or not. For the explanation, a UV
filter is simply a piece of glass that blocks the UV. Because today the
digital camera have UV filter built into them, they ain't much needed to
prevent the blue effect we had on film. But they have another use, that
is to protect the front of your lens. When you pay 1 000$&+ for a lens,
it can be nice to put a little protection in front so if the lens touch
the cake on a table, you only have to clean the UV filter and if
something does leave a scratch then you change the UV filter (from 20$
to 100$).

But people will argue and fight like republican and democrats about if
it's worth to protect your lens because it everything you add to the
light path will decrease it<'s quality.

In my case, I consider that it's worth the small lost for the protection...

But that's a mix of religion and politics.

So on a technical point of view, yes all the software are available. Now
the question is more one of workflow. For sure you don't have all the
plugins and scripts for GIMP that Photoshop has, but there's many
advantage of GIMP and speed is one.

We now have Darktable that work as a Lightroom equivalent (or Entagle
that does the same).

Also, photography is a bit like all arts, there's level too.

I don't know what type of work your friends does and it's possible that
it's not possible to do so on Linux.

> (the macOS user is generally quite happy with it and the Apple ecosystem

Regarding MacOS user, I won't comment, they are blindfolded person who
don't know they are running Unix.

Possibly.

Ok, that sounds similar to some of the "holy wars" in Unix/Linux. It
seems every area is susceptible to these.

Thank you, that's a useful start. For your site I would suggest to
maintain information like this somewhere, e.g. in the form of a table
with links to more details about the differences.

It seems you are assuming it matters to them, or even should.

Tinkering with the OS is fun for me, but I also accept that it may not
be for everybody (or even a vast majority), not even for all debian-user
subscribers.

Kind regards,
Andrei

Thanks for those word.

I'll do my best to pull this off.

Thanks

Sounds like a very nice idea :)
As it happens such a community of users and creators of open source
photography software already exists at https://pixls.us. Many projects
use the forum (https://discuss.pixls.us/) as their official place for
support. There's a section to showcase your works
(https://discuss.pixls.us/c/showcase/11) and one to share works for
everyone to try their hands on with processing, thus learn from each
other (https://discuss.pixls.us/tag/play_raw). And since recently
there's irregular videoconference meetups. The page itself features
tutorials and news around the FLOSS photography ecosystem.
I can very much recommend anyone interested in photography (and also
video) to have a look.
