Sorry, I can't really help. I use jmtpfs, and it certainly can be
slow, but I always assumed that that was inherent to the protocol or
the camrea / phone implementation, but who really knows.

You may find something useful on the ArchWiki MTP page, although it
doesn't have much on mtp-tools:

https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/Media_Transfer_Protocol

This has nothing to do with the "limited computer power" under the hood
of a camera. You'd be surprised of the power they got !
No this is inherent to the USB protocol, most camera are still using
only version 2.0. Also when you transfer a file using the USB cable on
your camera, you can gain some speed if you change the mode on the
camera to "DISK" instead of "MTP or Media". You won't be able to use
your camera when it will be plugged in the computer but transfer will be
much faster.

Not all camera offer this option, it's mostly good DSLR like Nikon (they
all offer this) and Canon (can't say all model offer this).

When you choose the MTP mode, this allow to control the camera thru the
USB cable and also transfer files. But the overhead on transfer is quite
high.

So change between mode when needed, if you are taking photo thru the
cable (Tethered use) then set to MTP and if you transfer, set as DISK.
Using disk mode, you camera will appear as a normal USB stick in the
file manager (under gnome / KDE).

Hope this help you a bit.

If you all are talking about it functioning via a camera's cable,
Thunar recently put me through that same experience. Because it was so
much slower than my card readers, I assumed it was something inherent
to the limited amount of basically everything that average cameras
have under the hood.

Ditto on ArchWiki all the way around. That's how I learned to use A
LOT of *Debian* early on. I think it boiled down to how their way of
writing up their documentation gelled with how my brain cognitively
operates.

It's not just a question of personal preference; ArchWiki is just
objectively (often? usually?) much better than Debian Wiki. A recent
example: compare the ArchWiki U2F page with the Debian Wiki one:

https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/Universal_2nd_Factor
https://wiki.debian.org/Security/U2F

The Debian page contains much less information than the Arch one, and
some of the information it does contain (the claim that SSH is "not
supported yet") is just plain wrong (outdated, I suppose).

Yes, I know it's a Wiki. I have edited a number of pages on the Debian
Wiki, and I intend to fix up this one, too, when I get the chance,
unless someone else gets to it first.

You know what you are talking about. Just do it. It isn't a race
between you and others.

I didn't mean to imply that it was a race - I just meant to avoid
havinng uttered a falsehood should someone else get to it first ;)

Try go-mtpfs. On my system jmtpfs will transfer large files at about
100MByte/s and go-mtpfs at about 220MByte/s. jmtpfs also tends to freeze
up and take forever to perform basic file listings, etc.
