It works...!!!

That's what I did:

1) I plugged the Behringer into the mains;

2) I connected the Behringer to the PC via Behringer's USB cable;

3) I plugged 3 amplified loudspeaker (could also be not amplified but then
   sound is low) into 3 of the 4 black holes (the TRS ones, but it could be ok
   also with the RCA ones, I didn't try yet) of the `PLAYBACK OUTPUTS' system
   on the back of the Behringer;

4) from my Linux box I did:

   $ ecasound -f:16,3,44100 -i:sndfile,3canali.wav -o alsaplugin,2,0

   where `3canali.wav' is a 3-channels file.

And voilà: each of the 3 loudspeakers play a different channel of the 3
channels composing `3canali.wav'.  There don't seem to be any issue with
Behringer's controls: the `MAIN OUT' and `MIX' knobs can be whatever, such as
the `STEREO/MONO' switch (so it seems).

Late to party...

In order to diagnose multi-channel output I've found 'aplay -L' and 
'speaker-test -cX' (where X is the desired/supported number of channels) 
to be invaluable.

Do you think the same purpose could be achieved as well with a simple device
like this:

Short answer: maybe, it depends a lot on what you need this for.

At a minimum your system must have a S/PDIF output (obviously).

Then you must somehow convince your system to generate AC-3 output as 
regular output to the ALSA spdif/iec958 output is two channels only[1].

Kodi (and probably everything else based on ffmpeg) can do so for at 
least FLAC and AAC 5.1 audio (tested).

It should be much easier to address a specific channel with an audio 
device with 6 (or recently 8) analog outputs, like this[2].

You should also get individual 4 independent volume controls (Front, 
Surround, Center and LFE).


[1] at least for my audio devices 'speaker-test' only accepts '2' for 
the '--channels/-c' parameter for all digital outputs, but the 
'surround51' analog output accepts 2, 4 and 6.

Disclaimer: this is just an example, Linux compatibility unknown. It's 
probably a good idea to buy something like this only from sellers that 
allow quick and easy returns, no questions asked, just in case it 
doesn't work well for you.
