Got sound from the Intel device on the system board.  Oddly enough 
there was a plastic cover over the sockets on the chassis back.  Pried 
it off to plug the speaker jack.

Read https://wiki.debian.org/ALSA and followed the Troubleshooting and 
Checklist sections.

Mostly consistent with visible hardware.  Really just one USB.
Odd that the Intel device refers to both ICH4 & ICH5.

Initialize one device?  According to the manual, all should be initialized.

That gives the white noise from ICH(4|5).

Try initializing other devices.

I had to restore mail archive from the backup to understand what exact
problem you're referring to. You could've started a new thread as well.

aplay -L
arecord -L

I've mentioned the first one at least twice in my previous e-mails, but
I've yet to see full output of them. Please provide it.

And, since I mentioned that then - installing pulseaudio could solve
this problem too.

Since the earlier discussion, pulseaudio was here.  Another layer of 
complexity without solving the identity problem, for me at least.  

Yesterday I removed pulseaudio according to the principal: if no 
special cases make sense, tackling the more complex problem is 
premature.

Broken threads are usual sight here these days. Too many people using
$DEITY knows what instead of a good and proper MUA :)
Heck, "many readers" do not even know that e-mail is threaded by its
very nature.

Or this:

And likewise:

I'm unsure what should "usbstream:CARD=Set" do, but try it as well.

I used to dislike it too. Things had changed in this regard once I've
obtained a Bluetooth headset.

No sound.  Channels (or channels) has me stumped for now.

Gives the noise.  Good.  I guess hw = hardware.  No explanation of 
plughw in the aplay manual but google found a few remarks. 

Conclusion for users who want sound and don't care about channels: try plughw.

The "front" device gives silence.  A cable inside the box is not 
connected to the system board?  Will check when there is time.

Try a voice message.

So try play.  It lacks the -D parameter.  Two commands required.  =8~(

play WARN alsa: can't encode 0-bit Unknown or not applicable

In spite of the warning, sound is produced.  Good!  Might have a 
reliable way to hear voice messages.

CONCLUSIONS

Audio messages can be interpreted.  Eg.,
set AUDIODEV=plughw:CARD=ICH5,DEV=0; play m94.WAV

"aplay -L" reported approximately 61 devices.  A few hours of trial 
and error (and note writing) got sound from four. Terrible odds.  
(Computing is so much more productive when based upon reason rather 
than guesswork.)

The best alsa documentation I've found in debian.org is 
https://wiki.debian.org/ALSA .  In my view, the first sentence should 
direct the reader to learn basics at 
https://alsa-project.org/wiki/Main_Page . Even so crucial gaps are 
obvious.  What exactly is a channel?  A reader should be wary of any 
document containing undefined terms.
