#229512 — running microsoft team on debian 10.3

One of the local government agencies that i would like to interact with
communicates using Microsoft Team. The software actually has a debian
package, which i have downloaded, but not installed yet.

I have a computer running debian 10.3, but it does not have a web cam or a
mic.

So presumably i need to set up both of those items to make this work.

Does anybody have any experience using Microsoft Team on debian, and is
there anything i need to be cautious about (of course apart from running
software from a giant software company)?

Any advice about the web cam or mic?

TIA for any pointers.

No experience of team in linux

These 2 links give directions on how to use an android phone/tablet as
your PC camera/mic:

https://askubuntu.com/questions/889164/use-phone-as-microphone-in-linux

https://www.bytesin.com/how-to-use-your-phone-as-a-webcam-on-windows-linux-and-macos/

I've put that off for weeks now, but will HAVE to do it early new year.

This looks interesting, indeed (tho Plumble is not maintained any more
AFAICT, you might be able to use Mumla instead, also available from F-Droid).

AFAICT these are all proprietary software, so I wouldn't recommend them.

Well, considering the pandemic, as many others, I had to test several
solutions for distant collaborating. Well, actually, we are accustomed
to doing this in free software and open source, so using Git, NextCloud
or OwnCloud, mailing lists and Jitsi, you can very efficiently
collaborate with distant collaborators.

Now, very often institutions do not consider free software nor open
source and without testing these options, run for proprietary solutions.
I had to test Zoom and Microsoft Teams. Zoom works quite well, is
expensive and everything runs on own Zoom servers—which I consider being
a problem.

Microsoft Teams do runs on Linux, except for screen sharing—you will
not be able to share your screen, even using the web application. Except
for that, you will not have more troubles than other users, but I have
seen people using Microsoft Windows and macOS having trouble to connect
with Microsoft Teams …

Now, comparing Jitsi, Zoom, Discord and Microsoft Teams, my experience
is Microsoft Teams is the worst of those solutions. In my experience,
Zoom and Jitsi are the two best, from a user perspective and not
considering the problem of proprietary software, the experience is the
same with Jitsi and Zoom. Zoom has some options to create sub
rooms—sorry, I cannot find the proper English word—, to do so with Jitsi
you need to create several meeting rooms, which is a bit less efficient,
but in my experience it is not a problem. With Jitsi, you can use your
own server or servers from Jitsi.org.

> Any advice about the web cam or mic?

I use a webcam from Logitech with embedded microphone and it works very
well.

	Best regards.

This has not been my experience. I can share my screen just fine using
the Teams client. I cannot, however, share system audio, and the
microphone, while it will work initially, will stop working if you
adjust the volume through Teams (as opposed to using the Cinnamon
volume applet).

What everyone said: it works, but it will look and act differently from
all other apps and you just have to adapt to Microsoft's off-kilter
design to use it.

As Eric S. Fraga said, turn off most or all notifications. I have a
company cell phone, so I installed the Teams app on that, and use the
phone for all my audio and notifications, just using the Linux app to
display shared video.

FWIW, my Logitech webcam works fine with Teams.

According to Microsoft, this option is not available on Linux client
(https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/office/share-content-in-a-meeting-in-teams-fcc2bf59-aecd-4481-8f99-ce55dd836ce8?ui=en-us&rs=en-us&ad=us).

You have to know the vocabulary.

They say that "window" sharing is not available. "Screen" sharing is.
That is, you can't share a specific application, but you can share your
entire screen.

Regardless of the vocabulary, I have hit several times the screen
sharing button, nothing ever happened.

Now, to be honest, this is one of the annoying thing about Microsoft
Teams, it is the kind of application that make you waste time rather
than saving time.

	Best regards.

I mainly using Fedora and the native client works OK for sharing the screen
and also for audio.

Concerning your point not to use MS - like other proprietary programs - I
agree with you in principle.
However, in practice I have no choice: since Corona I have to use Teams on
my work, and technically Teams works surprisingly good and seams to be
actively supported.

Exactly. And very frustrating it is when your choice of screens is a
wide 38" or a 27" in portrait mode... Why they cannot support window
sharing is beyond me.

Zoom has the same limitation on Linux but at least zoom allows the other
participants to zoom (no pun intended) into the view presented by the
application.

In case it helps someone, zooming by the viewer in Teams should work on
mobile devices (tested on company iPad), no ideea about the desktop or
web app.

Good to know.

I tried with somebody using a Windows 10 laptop and there did not appear
to be any zooming capability in the Teams viewer unfortunately. Zoom
(the application) worked a little better in this regard in that it
allows zooming in but not panning (or at least it wasn't apparent that
panning was possible).

Basically, Linux versions of these apps are not as good which, these
days, is rather surprising (to me) as platform independent software
should be much easier to write than it used to be. In the case of
Teams, of course, there is a disincentive for MS to support Linux
properly...

That's correct. MS has this on its development roadmap, but it is not
part of the app or the web client at this time.

Update: it does seem that zoom allows sharing individual
windows. Worked for me this morning with 100 participants. I do have a
paid-for zoom account (via my work place).

Dan,

Teams runs really well under Debian Buster but like you I don't have a
microphone or headset configured. As far as the Teams "experience," it is
equally good on Linux and windows. It shows that Microsoft has put quite a
bit of effort into making Teams Linux compatible.

Try this:
The camera is called Fogéek and Amazon sold it to me for $49.95. Specs
from the box it came in are as follows:
Image sensor :                  CMOS
Pixel :                                 5 Million
Maximum Resolution :    2592*1944
Frame rate:                        30fps
Port                                     USB2.0

If I could send you a picture, I would. It is very clear, no visible
pixels, did not require a bright light, and the
audio pickup is very clear and audible without shouting at it or
anything. And I don't work for Amazon or
the Chinese people who made the camera.

You have to be a bit careful with high resolution cameras using USB-2.
Unless they have an integral H.264 encoder there isn't enough bandwidth
on USB-2 to run full resolution at full frame-rate.

This problem exists at least in some microsoft branded cameras that
offer high specs until you read the fine print.

I must use it at work. I kinds of work (on testing)
Very bad integration with pulseaudio, you can choose the device in the
soft, but it does not have any effect, keep a pavucontrol at hand.
I did not succeed in making it ring on the sound device of my choice, it
always defaukt to what was the default sound device at the time teams
was started (and of this I am not completely sure).

Very bad interaction with window manager also (I use KDE), it comes with
its own buttons bar(and you must gess what a square or an horizontal
line do), which lacks some controls (eg change desktop). I had to resort
to a kwinrule to force the standard controls.

I still ask for documentation since interface is for me completely
illogical. Note that the MS .deb installs a new source in your apt
system, then you have 2 packages teams and teams-insiders the latter
being somekind of testing version of teams (but sometimes, they are the
same version of the product)

I use it (have to for work) on Debian testing. Works generally
okay. The main problem is that it does not play well with the window
manager or desktop environment. For instance, it re-invents the wheel
when it comes to notifications which causes some annoyance as
notifications steal the focus.

And don't get me started with the chat feature...

Best is to turn off most notifications. I also did have to turn off gpu
acceleration in teams as it consistently crashed my video but that was
potentially an issue with the nouveau driver.
