#228843 — "humor": "first bug?" (bug in my (backlit thin screen) computer monitor)

Hey, I've got a bug in my computer monitor -- I wonder if I'm the first
(probably not ;-).

I believe it is a fungus gnat, and it has been crawling around within my
screen for the last 3 days. (There must be a (probably very thin) hollow
space between the backlight and the LCD (? or whatever) layer that actually
displays the characters).)

I was hoping that I could crush it by pressing (reasonably gently) on the
somewhat flexible front protective layer of the screen, but apparently not -- I
guess I'll just have to wait him/her out -- I hope it is not a (mating) pair.
;-)

Oh, in case someone thinks it is a computer virus, I'm about 99.99+% sure it
is not -- the monitor runs from 3 different computers (via a KVM switch) and
the gnat appears on all 3 and in the same position (probably with a slight
delta to account for crawling during the KVM switching time).

Correction: On more careful examination (when there are colors on the screen),
the hollow space must be in front of the LCD surface, behind the protective
(clear) flexible front cover. (I had trouble determining that against black
text, but it is clear when there is color on the screen.)

Hi,

Or maybe a springtail ?
They are good at crawling in narrow environments.

Regrettably the "CD fungus" was never properly cultivated and identified.
Maybe you can get a close-distance camera and take some evidence photos
before Isotomurus televisificum gets extinct ?

Have a nice day :)

Thomas

"Computer bugs" are getting smaller.
The original "bug" [moth] had a 2 inch wing span ;/

- which would leave a splodge that you can't clean ...

If you turn the screen off, so there's no backlight and no heat from that
- I suppose that might take a while to cool, at least on the scale that the
beastie is aware of - & mask the majority of the screen off from ambient
light, can you tempt the thing to follow a focussed light (or unfocussed
but revealed through a pinhole in a sheet of paper perhaps) off to the
edge?

Interesting idea, might try that!

In Germany (Europe probably) it might be a Fransenflügler or thrips.
See
https://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fransenfl%C3%BCgler#Fransenfl%C3%BCgler_und_TFT-Monitore
for some suggestions. It's a german text. The english Wikipedia page doesn't
have this section.

Regards,
Jörg.
