And today, lockup happened with smplayer (with mpv under the hood) so it
is more general issue with X/kernel/hardware. :(

I would continue using the DVI port, but with a DVI-to-HDMI adapter, long enough
to determine if the problem is exclusive to the HDMI port itself.
