#227950 — wrong from field with alpine

Subjectwrong from field with alpine

hi,

when I send a mail with alpine, the from field becomes
"frenkiel@laposte.net" instead of "p.frenkiel@laposte.net"

An obvious consequence is that people can't reply to this mail

that looks like an alpine bug. I'll then make a bug report, unless
somebody tells me what I'm doing wrong.

How does alpine ascertain what your From: field should be constructed
from? I'm guessing that it uses loginname@domainname, and I suspect
that you login as frenkiel, not p.frenkiel.

In mutt, you can have set from="foo@whatever.tld" set up both
globally, and overridden for particular folders. You probably have
an equivalent configuration variable that you could set.

Cheers,
David.

I believe the default local-part of the From address in Alpine is
derived (as is the default personal name part) from the system password
file (user login name). Pressing S (SETUP) in the main menu, then C
(CONFIG) and adding the From value desired to the Customized Headers
field should provide a satisfactory solution:

  From: Pierre Frenkiel <p.frenkiel@laposte.net>

Then again, if memory serves, it often appears in your always very
individual case whatever is suggested either doesn't work, or even if it
does, turns out somehow to be suboptimal. YMISTV (Your Mileage
Invariably Seems To Vary).

(Ah. I now see that I am repeating Curt's advice.)

I speculate that the second line you list above clobbers the value set
in the previous line, so you only end up with the second value set.

In a reply to a similar question raised by Roger Price elsewhere in
the thread, David Wright suggested giving a single, comma-separated
list as value:

  https://lists.debian.org/msgid-search/20201021211620.GB5319@axis.corp

So you might try setting the customized-hdrs value just once, with
something like

customized-hdrs=From: Pierre Frenkiel <p.frenkiel@laposte.net>,
 		      Reply-To: Pierre Frenkiel <p.frenkiel@laposte.net>

One thing you could try is go to config settings in alpine

Main menu >> Setup >> Config

search for the setting "Customized Headers", and set it to something like this:

Customized Headers = From: Pierre Frenkiel <p.frenkiel@laposte.net>

If you use alpine's "Role" rules, it is possible to override this for
a given role (ie, you could set a different "From:" header value for
that role).

> An obvious consequence is that people can't reply to this mail

Well, I guess that would be true if you had sent it with alpine (but
it appears that you did not).

Thanks, I've wondered for a long time how to do this. Is it possible to set a
second customized header? I tried to append Cc: ... but got an error message.

Did you separate the headers with a comma?

If it's not that, perhaps explain "append" and disclose the error message.

Cheers,
David.

The error message was the From: field in a new email:

  From : Roger Price <roger@rogerprice.org>,
            UNEXPECTED_DATA_AFTER_ADDRESS@".SYNTAX-ERROR."

I had forgotten the comma. With a comma I now get

Customized Headers = From: Roger Price <roger@rogerprice.org>
                                        Cc: Roger Price <roger@rogerprice.org>

and the correct headers.

Roger
