Hi, Dan Ritter wrote: > Machrone's Law: the computer you really want always costs $5000. There once was a rule for Hewlett Packard Germany that every part costs 5000 Mark. Actually i am in good hope for my next workstation for about 1600 EUR: Xeon, 4+ GHz, 4 core, 32 GB DDR4-2666 ECC, 500 GB NVMe x4, 4 TB HDD CMR, Blu-ray burner, low noise Midi-Tower, extra silent 550W power supply (3 percent points VAT reduction because of the plague times we are in !) I lack of ideas for employing more than 4 cores with 8 threads. But if i had bursting money bags, highly parallel work to do, and a free room in the basement, i'd consider a double processor with 192 cores and 768 Threads: https://www.hardwareluxx.de/images/cdn01/8796C26D364947EEADD20D47BCA5D03D/img/9A6D747A98C74942B3962C889D782DDC/Gigabyte-Marvell-ThunderX3-00001_9A6D747A98C74942B3962C889D782DDC.jpg Nevertheless, i am already duely impressed by the single Threadripper with 64 cores (for about 3900 EUR over here). Have a nice day :) Thomas

Back when there was a difference between PCs and workstations the main
rule I remember was that about half the money went to the screen.

My last PC/workstation was a good bit less money than that and
*actually* (rather than "extra") silent (Thin-ITX with a fanless case).
Admittedly, it was only dual-core, but looking at recent processors,
quad-cores (e.g. Ryzen 5 Pro 3400G, tho the Ryzen 5 Pro 3400GE's 35W TDP
would be even better) should fit within the power-constraints of such
a fanless case.

And the box with the screen had big warnings that two people are needed to unpack the content. > My last PC/workstation was a good bit less money than that Man goennt sich ja sonst nichts. :)) (= One doesn't allow oneself any other luxury.) In any case it is what i can reasonably wish for. I already have scruples because of the 32 GB of RAM. 16 would have been enough. But i have this reflex to double the capacity with each new generation of hardware. (Need to buy some organic turnips to compensate.) > *actually* (rather than "extra") silent (Thin-ITX with a fanless case). I began my planning with a small fanless system, because CPU power isn't really an issue for me nowadays. But i need a replacement for my current workstation after 5 years of relentless service. There must be room for two SATA attached optical drives and i was instructed that i want ECC RAM again. From ECC RAM my hardware supplier quickly got to Xeon and matching mainboards. The local Ryzen biotope for ECC is still small. So i will have to endure some fans, albeit large and slowly spinning. Have a nice day :) Thomas

Here the cost is 9812.46$. The memory is 256gb. Way too expensive. When we left the US, we bought two macs pro. here the tax is high.
