You could use tasksel instead.

Is 'Apt-get install multimedia' a valid command?

Obviously they're asking for the name of a package which can be
substituted for the word "multimedia" in that command to achieve
their desired effect. (And the capital A is wrong, but we all know
that, and it's bad form to harp on it.)

The closest thing to what they're asking for would be to run tasksel
and select one of the tasks from it, or to figure out the task-*
metapackage name that closely resembles what tasksel would do for each
given task, and then install that package.

Using tasksel seems like the better answer in this case, because this is
clearly not an experienced Debian user.

If they gave signs that they had any clue what they're doing, then it
might be appropriate to give a more sophisticated answer, like
"use equivs to generate a local package that Depends: on all of the
things you want, and then install that on each of your target machines".

But they didn't, so "tasksel".

But, for want of a better response, you could not resist commenting on
the typo. As you say - bad form. :)

You haven't any suggestion to feed to tasksel?

Still possibly useful to some person coming from where file systems
are case-semi-sensitive. So a small dose of "bad form" seems (at least
in my eyes) essential. Kind of what trace elements do to biological
life, if you allow the strained metaphor :-)

So thanks for those yummy trace elements, anyway.

Cheers

Perhaps one should encourage people to copy and paste, so as to show
the *exact* command issued?

On reflection, a typo in a command may have consequences, unlike
mispeling Debain. So I accept the criticism is not bad form.

Meanwhile, I am trying to figure out what non-biological life looks
like. :)

OTOH, having command names which only differ in letter case is
somewhat... evil?

Pretty solid stuff at that temp. But it would be part of the local
environment, and likely 40C at the instant. Couple glugs and wakeup.

Interesting blog, but falls face first in its morning oatmeal because the
local insulation is not perfect, and the environments temperature is
nominally .0001 degrees above absolute zero on the scale of this
particular universe. Ergo, the heat flow is outward.

Hello

There are metapackages (groups of packages) in Debian.
I am not aware a a global multimedia Debian metapackage
There are some multimedia metapackages, though:

$ apt search multimedia-
[...]
multimedia-ambisonics/stable 0.7 all
Packages for working with ambisonics (3D surround sound)

multimedia-animation/stable 0.7 all
  Packages for creating animations

multimedia-audio-plugins/stable 0.7 all
Audio processing plugins, synths and virtual instruments

multimedia-audio-utilities/stable 0.7 all
packages for manipulating & cataloging music and audio

multimedia-broadcasting/stable 0.7 all
Packages for broadcasting media publicly or in the home

multimedia-csound/stable 0.7 all
  Packages for working with Csound

multimedia-devel/stable 0.7 all
Extra packages for developers and package compiling

multimedia-djing/stable 0.7 all
  Packages for Disk Jockeys

multimedia-drums/stable 0.7 all
  Packages for drums & beats

multimedia-firewire/stable 0.7 all
Packages for your firewire audiocard / interface

multimedia-graphics/stable 0.7 all
Packages for making and editing artwork

multimedia-guitar/stable 0.7 all
Packages for playing with your (virtual) guitar gear

multimedia-jack/stable 0.7 all
JACK (Jack Audio Connection Kit) and ALSA related packages

multimedia-ladi/stable 0.7 all
  LADI, Linuxaudio session management, packages

multimedia-looping/stable 0.7 all
Packages for looping music and audio

multimedia-midi/stable 0.7 all
  MIDI related packages

multimedia-mixing/stable 0.7 all
Packages for mixing and mastering your music

multimedia-musiciantools/stable 0.7 all
  Packages for musicians

multimedia-photography/stable 0.7 all
Packages for working with digital photography

multimedia-players/stable 0.7 all
Packages which makes your multimedia tools complete

multimedia-puredata/stable 0.7 all
Packages for working with Pure Data

multimedia-recording/stable 0.7 all
  Packages for audio recording

multimedia-samplers/stable 0.7 all
  Software samplers

multimedia-soundsynthesis/stable 0.7 all
  Packages for sound synthesis

multimedia-supercollider/stable 0.7 all
  Packages for working with SuperCollider

multimedia-tasks/stable 0.7 all
  Debian Multimedia tasks for tasksel
[...]

So if, for example, you want "multimedia" for playing multimedia (audio, video...), you could do:
$ sudo apt install multimedia-players

Chances are that you don't need an additional media-player (you have one if you have installed a Desktop Environment (Gnome by default)) but you need proprietary codecs for decoding certain media files.
You would probably read the Codecs article in the Debian Wiki:
 https://wiki.debian.org/MultimediaCodecs?action=show&redirect=DebianMultimedia%2FMultimediaCodecs

If you really want to install all related multimedia metapackages, I thinkk you could do:
$ sudo apt install multimedia-*
But it would install a huge number of packages.

- please reply to the debian.user mailing list, not to me personnaly: one purpose of such a list is to have archives that users can search later in order to solve their own problems similar to those mentionned here :-)

- Didier is my firstname: don't call me Mr Didier, just call me Didier :-)

To answer your question:
$ apt search your_criteria
will search for packages either present in your local package database or in repositories you have allowed (consult /etc/apt/sources.list file and /etc/apt/sources.list.d directory) whose name contains the your_criteria string.

this searching operation is similar to the apt-cache search one, whose manpage is here:
 https://linux.die.net/man/8/apt-cache

Ypu will find additional information regarding Debian package management here:
 https://www.debian.org/doc/manuals/debian-reference/ch02.en.html

there is a brief memento (debian reference card) here:
 https://www.debian.org/doc/manuals/refcard/refcard.en.pdf

Generally speaking, ou will find interesting Debian documentation at this webpage:
 https://www.debian.org/doc/index.en.html
and there is a wiki, too:

Considering the answers you've got so far, I have nothing better to suggest but a single question because you've intrigued me ;)
=> Do you mind sharing a practical use case of such a request please?

Indeed, from my side, even if I like the technical aspect of this request I can only see problems ahead: numerous redundant packages / choice overload in your desktop environment, increase of the attack surface, required storage space, upgrades more frequent/time-consuming...

NB: If multimedia is your hobby or job and you need to have the whole toolset, maybe you should look for a specialized Linux distribution instead (AV Linux, UbuntuStudio, LibreELEC...).
See https://distrowatch.com/search.php?ostype=Linux&category=Multimedia&origin=All&basedon=All&notbasedon=None&desktop=All&architecture=All&package=All&rolling=All&isosize=All&netinstall=All&language=All&defaultinit=All&status=Active#simple

I'm not the OP, nor is multimedia my job (it might be, or maybe has been at
times, a hobby), but I have another use case (or two) for such a request.

if I was just getting into a field (e.g., multimedia), or switching OSs /
distros, I might want to try out all the available multimedia apps and then
(1) pick the best (suited to me) app of a type I'm used to, or (2) to see what
other types of multimedia apps might be available with features I might not
have even known exist.

Have you tried out your suggestion?

My system has just over 2000 packages installed. It can record, it has
a few players, and it has some audio applications for processing WAVs,
MP3s, MIDI, etc. I have all those mentioned by the OP except vlc (which
therefore gets included below). /usr occupies 8.6GB.

There are 27 multimedia-* packages in buster/main (see Didier's list),
so I simulated installing them. I won't post the console log as it's
280kB, but here's a digest:

NOTE: This is only a simulation!
apt-get needs root privileges for real execution.
Keep also in mind that locking is deactivated,
so don't depend on the relevance to the real current situation!
Reading package lists...
Building dependency tree...
Reading state information...
The following additional packages will be installed:
[ 361 lines ]
Suggested packages:
[ 143 lines ]
Recommended packages:
[ 11 lines ]
The following packages will be REMOVED:
[2 packages ]
The following NEW packages will be installed:
[ 369 lines ]

0 upgraded, 1818 newly installed, 2 to remove and 0 not upgraded.

Seriously, who do you want to inflict this on.

Cheers,
David.

I guess you're talking to me, and the answer is no, I haven't. And I have
read the rest of your email.

When I first came to Linux, the way I decided on my initial distro (which,
iirc, was Mandrake, but maybe SuSE was before that), I collected installation
disks from all the distros I could find by attending things like LUG meetings
(where I got them free), computer shows (either the selling kind (where I had
to pay for distros, or maybe the hobbyist display type show (where, again, I
often got some free).

Then I simply inserted them in my computer, one after the other -- with each
one, I tried to install it, and, if it installed, I tried running some apps,
and, if it looked decent, I used it (until I found something that bothered
me), and then I'd try another distro.

I will say that, back in those days (ca. 2000) I didn't like Debian or GNOME.
I still don't like GNOME the default color scheme was dark, the logo looked
fuzzy, and overall, things were just hard to see. My problem with Debian
(which has gone away now), was, in those days, they asked some really esoteric
questions during the install, like the make and model of your disk controller.

Oh, almost forgot, some install disks I downloaded from various sources.
Downloading a CD (with my 33.6 kbps modem) took something like 63 hours -- I'd
do that over the course of 4 or 5 nights -- when I and my family stopped using
our computers for the night, I'd start the download -- when we woke up and
started using computers, I'd stop the download, then resume that night, and so
on.

I wouldn't be bothered by having to install 2000 packages / 8.6 GB, especially
if I thought it would help me get jump started on something.

(Aside: iirc, rsync didn't yet exist (or I wasn't aware of it) at the time I
started downloading things like that -- I was thrilled when I found rsync and
could resume a problem download without starting over from the beginning.)

;-)

regards,
Randy Kramer

Type

        apt-cache --names-only search multimedia | less

and look through the list to find a package that has what you need.
