It's a long time since I used it, can't remember if this worked or not
#!/bin/bash
GPS=`identify -format "%[EXIF:GPSLatitude]" tiger.jpg`
echo $GPS

I don't know anything about GPS
https://exiftool.org/geotag.html
seems to be saying that GPS is in a track log and not the image.

It's the OP they've got photos on their phone and wants to know where
they were taken.
 From what I can gather the GPS data is in a separate file on the phone
so if using Exiftool you'd have to first put the GPS data from the log
file into the image file.

I don't know, but GPS can be enabled or not - this is why I am saying if it
is not enabled it will be nowhere.

I'm far from an expert, but I do know on Android phones that some apps
store their data in system areas not accessible via MTP and such. I
suppose it is possible for the phone to maintain a database of photo
image file names and associate them with geo info stored when the photo
taken and then presented when viewing the pictures.

Pretty much any image viewer can show exif information. The question is
how this address is encoded. There are standard ways to encode gps
coordinates, but I'm not sure

Select one picture from your phone. Transfer it to the computer, run
$ exiftool -s image.jpg | grep '<part of the address shown on phone>'

If the address is stored in the photo as part of Exif data, this should
show the field name, which you can then query again using
$ exiftool -<HipotheticalTagName> image.jpg

If the first grep does not find the address, then either it's encoded in
some weird binary format, or not stored in the picture at all. It could
be stored in some other file in the phone, or the phone dynamically gets
an address based on the gps coordinates.

To get GPS coordinates, you can try
$ exiftool -a -s -gps:all image.jpg

The pictures contains latitude and longitude. What your phone does is
converting it to street address using a mapping application, probably
google maps on android or Apple Map on iPhone

For a free service (OSM nominatim), try:
