#222111 — Mouse awfully slow on Debian 10 on certain machines

SubjectMouse awfully slow on Debian 10 on certain machines
Message-ID<A0ZMJ-4gq-9@gated-at.bofh.it>
Hello list,

I installed Debian 10 on my Fujitsu TX 100 S1 (64 and 32 Bit possible)
with debian 64. After that I observed: the mouse pointer is awfully
slow. Therefore I went back to Debian 9 32-bit.

On a HP-Pavillon 64-bit Debian 10 works just fine.

Anybody knows about this problem? What can I do?

tia
Jörg

The mouse speed is controlled by libinput.
(Although Mate has its own settings for that.)
You can read about it here:
https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Mouse_acceleration#Mouse_acceleration_with_libinput

In short, create /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/10-libinput.conf .
As an example, mine has these contents:

Section "InputClass"
  Identifier "Logitech USB Laser Mouse"
  Driver "libinput"
  Option "AccelProfile" "flat"
  Option "AccelSpeed" "-0.5"
EndSection

The value of "AccelSpeed" ranges from -1 to 1.
My mouse had to be slowed down, hence the negative value.

The Identifier can be found in the output of 'xinput list'.
So replace the above value of Identifier with yours.

And the changes can be tested on the fly with xinput --set-prop, no need
to restart the X11 server just to check if the speed setting is
satisfactory.

thanks a lot

In order to test your suggestions I tried them under Debian 9 - 32-Bit
-  however these programs do not exist on my debian 9  - neither xinput
and for *libinput* I found:

bash: libinput: Kommando nicht gefunden.  #*--- command not found*
root@primergy:/home/kampmann# whereis libinput
libinput: /usr/share/man/man4/libinput.4.gz

Any ideas?

Jörg

Perhaps you need to install them. I've noticed no changes in this area
between stretch and buster. dpkg -l shows:

dpkg-l-buster-2020-02-24-11-51-faye01:ii libinput-bin 1.12.6-2 i386 input device management and event handling library - udev quirks
dpkg-l-buster-2020-02-24-11-51-faye01:ii libinput10:i386 1.12.6-2 i386 input device management and event handling library - shared library
dpkg-l-buster-2020-02-24-11-51-faye01:ii xinput 1.6.2-1+b1 i386 Runtime configuration and test of XInput devices
dpkg-l-buster-2020-02-24-11-51-faye01:ii xserver-xorg-input-libinput 0.28.2-2 i386 X.Org X server -- libinput input driver
dpkg-l-stretch-2019-08-22-12-30-faye02:ii libinput-bin 1.6.3-1 i386 input device management and event handling library - udev quirks
dpkg-l-stretch-2019-08-22-12-30-faye02:ii libinput10:i386 1.6.3-1 i386 input device management and event handling library - shared library
dpkg-l-stretch-2019-08-22-12-30-faye02:ii xinput 1.6.2-1+b1 i386 Runtime configuration and test of XInput devices
dpkg-l-stretch-2019-08-22-12-30-faye02:ii xserver-xorg-input-libinput 0.23.0-2 i386 X.Org X server -- libinput input driver

I don't use xorg.conf for the mouse (only for coercing video modes on
two simultaneous displays). Instead I slow it down with lines like:
  xinput --set-prop "Logitech M325" "Coordinate Transformation Matrix" ".3 0 0 0 .3 0 0 0 1"
in ~/.xsession.

Actually, ~/.xsession runs ~/bin/xinput-xsession which runs the
appropriate commands for setting all the properties on all my
devices. The advantage is that if you plug in a mouse, then running
xinput-xsession will set it.

Cheers,
David.

Hello list, I did some further research. In particular I used the
live-ISO-image of Buster (amd64) on DVD and bootet the system. And I
found the following:

Mouse still is irrational. It works fine, when no application has
startet after logging. When then an application is started (in this case
firefox of the DVD) the mouse mostly does not move. It jumps. And when
there is a button something similar, the mouse behaves even worse. I did
not dig into the "InputClass" because I did not find it.

So any help is urgently needed.

I did some further research with live-CD's, as well with x86 as amd64:
Results on both versions:

mouse behaves normal after booting system and log in (when no application runs) - first thing I saw was:

"*Oh no, something has gone wrong*" (I think this is no problem) so I continued and got the normal
user screen. I pressed right button for settings:

The mouse was a bit jumping and when I moved to the group of background pictures (via click) the
mouse from picture to picture (from one background picture to the neighbouring one) is "sticky".
this occurs on each "border" of the pictures.

Then I started an application.

I chose Firefox as application and started it. here the mouse was more or less fixed ... also
keyboard typing was not possible. The mouse behaved as if stuck to the mousepad.

Then I started another application:
the mouse disappeared when moved from neutral background to the window of the application.

I have the impression the applications hinder the mouse to move. could this be a priority problem?

kind regards
Jörg
