#222220 — Custom application icon do not appear in Gnome and LXQT

FromYvan Masson <yvan@masson-informatique.fr>

SubjectCustom application icon do not appear in Gnome and LXQT
Message-ID<A2EXw-Ve-9@gated-at.bofh.it>
Hi,

I made a small graphical app with Python/GTK. When installing it
(manually or via pip3), it properly appears in the software list.

However, after starting the app, Gnome does not show my icon but a
default one, indicating it is missing or invalid. I installed LXQT to
compare, and result is identical (no icon at all after application
started). Tests were done on my laptop running Debian testing.

I ran `gtk-update-icon-cache` in the proper directory to create an icon
theme cache, but it does not help.

This issue is driving me crazy :-)

Code is on https://framagit.org/Yvan-Masson/LibreTrombi
Icons are in directory `LibreTrombi/data/icons/hicolor`

Any idea would be greatly welcome!

Regards,
Yvan

my apologies to Yvan, I replied to him by e-mail (clicked too hastily)

I am not knowledgeable at all about this subject but perhaps you will
find some hints there?

No problem Didier, I appreciate all answers, even not on the list :-)

I had not read the Freedesktop wiki before, but unfortunately it does
not help: I thought the solution was here when it says icon "has to have
the same name as the executable", but tried it without luck (and many
well-know programs do not conform to this statement, see simple-scan for
example).

I just read again the "icon naming spec" and "desktop-entry-spec" but I
still fail to find the the cause of this issue.

Any other idea, even eccentric, is welcome!

Just to clarify ... did you specify the absolute path to the icon or
not? If not, where did you install the icon file?

PS Please don't top-post.

I used a relative path (without file extension), and installed the icons
(PNG of different sizes and one SVG) in /usr/local/share/icons/hicolor/.
I also tried in /usr/share/icons/hicolor/ and
~/.local/share/icons/hicolor/ with the same result.

Sorry I do not understand your question: I only have one icon, in
different sizes (plus one SVG in the "scalable" subdirectory). What I
understand is that Freedesktop specification says that application
developpers should put the icon in the hicolor directory: am I wrong or
missing something?

To simplify the question: what does

    gsettings get org.gnome.desktop.interface icon-theme

say?

OK. Try putting your icon file in one of the Adwaita directories instead
of hicolor.

Thanks for the suggestion, but no change. It seems normal because
desktop environment must fall back to hicolor theme when the icon is not
found is the current theme (see "Installing Application Icons" in
https://specifications.freedesktop.org/icon-theme-spec/icon-theme-spec-latest.html#install_icons).

I might have a similar issue as the one discribed on
https://github.com/solus-project/budgie-desktop/issues/821 but I still
need to investigate.

OK, I found a solution: I renamed my python script in /usr/local/bin to
"libretrombi" and it works now.

I did so many tests I forgot that I won't try to find a proper
explanation. Thanks for your suggestions!

Unfortunately there must be caching somewhere in LXQT, or I missed
something, because after login in to Gnome again I could not see my icon
anymore. And I see now that it does not work anymore in LXQT… :-(

I will have to make some new tests… I will let you know.

I am again in a working state: my desktop file is named
"libretrombi.desktop", my icons "libretrombi.png", and my executable
"libretrombi". This is good, but I want to distribute my software with
Flatpak, which requires the use of an "application ID" (e.g.
org.domain.myapp), so I will continue experiment.

After more experiments, still on my personal laptop, I can say that when
my desktop file is named with an application ID (e.g.
com.example.myapp.desktop), it works only in LXQT but not in Gnome. Very
strange, as it works for other programs (e.g. org.gnome.Evolution.desktop).

Computer mysteries…

That looks reasonable. Does your current icon theme inherit from hicolor?
