You said you've got /var on a separate partition.  Was it always that
way (i.e. you created a /var partition during the installation)?  Or
did you create a separate /var later on, and move the content over to it?

If it was done by the installer, then one wonders which installer it
was exactly, and whether the results are reproducible.
