Hello!
What is the use of pushing an update with only powerpc changes to amd64?
Thank you.
linux (4.9.82-1+deb9u3) stretch-security; urgency=medium
* [powerpc] Backport more RFI flush related patches from 4.9.84. Closes:
#891249.
* [powerpc] Ignore ABI change in paca.

Things found: 'linux' and 'powerpc' If the original poster was implying "Linux is only for amd64", then is wake-up call to say "Linux is way more then architecture 'amd64'" Groeten Geert Stappers -- Leven en laten leven

My question is really this: Why should one using an amd64 hardware update its kernel/reboot when changes are only for powerpc? (or maybe you should so your monitoring will not complain about running an outdated kernel.) however, because the same linux kernel source package is used to build the linux kernel binary packages for all archs, the amd64 packages are also updated when there are no changes relevant to amd64. -- cheers, Holger

On my desktop machines, sure. On the server farm, assuming no fsck is needed, some of the hardware still needs six minutes to do disk enumeration and other BIOS-ish functions. Debian is the Universal OS, not the desktop/VM/laptop/of-course-you-have-a-single-SSD OS. -dsr-

This is just a side-effect of the way the packages are built. When a new source upload is made then it is built for all available architectures, even if the changes are not useful / relevant for them. Typically security updates apply to all architectures. In this case just be glad you got "lucky" - and you don't have to schedule reboot(s) of all your server(s). Steve -- https://steve.fi/
