Hi,

I used Debian 8.0 "Jessie", which was good. But when I upgraded to
"Stretch", the system was not satisfactory. I want my "Jessie" back, but I
do not have its installation image. Please tell me where can I get the
installation image of "jessie". Thanks.

I'm sorry to hear that your experience with our release did not meet
your expectations. Could you elaborate — perhaps by linking to bug
reports — what you had problems with?

Hi Chris,

Because I could no longer install Debian 8 "Jessie" on new machine and
update the old machines, I migrate to Debian 10 "Buster" with KDE Plasma.
But I found lots of problems and would appreciate your help solve them:

1. "Buster" system freezes when I am running programs in various virtual
desktop, especially YouTube. Is it a bug?

2. "Buster" no longer supports ecryptfs. Is there any other way to encrypt
a directory?

3. Some of regex commends that worked on old Debian Jessie do not work on
"Buster". What's wrong?

4. Is there any way to install the old "Jessie"?

Did you update to Debian 9 and then to Debian 10? If you skipped releases
- there's no straightforward way to work out what's gone wrong, necessarily.

This might be better asked in debian-user: debian-project is perhaps
not the most appropriate place.

You can always start again: install Jessie from the beginning then 
update to the latest versions gradually. Back up / save any data
from the machine before you do so: the installation from new
will almost certainly wipe all data.

if you want to migrate from Debian 8 to Debian 10 you must do two 
migration: first from Debian 8 to Debian 9 and then from Debian 9 to 
Debian 10

it is very hard to say something.
You must, at least, look at your logs and report if there are some 
wanings/errors when you do it. Also you can look at bugs on the program 
you are using for having virtual desktop (note that bugs can be closed 
after Buster release and so you don't have a patch for them in Buster).

If you have migrated from Debian 8 directory to Debian 10 you can have 
problems.

oldstable (Buster)

note that you don't have anymore security update so it is better to 
install a more recent Debian version

I have got the image of Debian-8.10. As to Debian 9 (Stretch) per Chris'
concern, I believe the main problem is the KDE 5 GUI that it used. There
had been lots of bugs reported. When I upgraded to Debian 9 from "Jessie",
all my KDE 4 GUI were messed. Also, the KDE 5 is more like Windows GUI,
which is not satisfactory, especially the SDDM. The new SDDM listed all the
users in the LOGIN  page, as in the Windows LOGIN. This reveals the
information of all the users of the platform, which is a security issue. In
the old KDM LOGIN, we can choose to key in username and password
separately, which is more secured, from my personal view.

#1 so I don't forget to say it: Don't forget to *backup* your existing first*

Now.. If you haven't already swapped back down to Jessie, there is the
possibility of adding in a different "desktop environment" alternative
to KDE. Then you could bring in any specific programs that are *why*
you like KDE.

One nice thing about that route is that after you do that, you could
then regularly revisit your KDE option to work toward filing bugs over
what's not working *as expected* in your case. That route does need
some extra hard drive space, though.

Unless you're just wanting to stay 100% KDE, period, which is totally
understandable as a single user *_CHOICE_*. If you decide to play
around with mixing and matching multiple desktop environments,
Debian-User listserv is one of the best places to receive ongoing user
interaction on how to do so:

There's a list of *all* packages available for Stretch right now. It's
"slightly" large, grin. After that webpage fully loads, a CTRL+F type
search of "desktop environment" will jump down to various
possibilities all the way down that page:

If your main concern happens to be the SDDM login, you may use alternative SDDM
themes that don’t display existing users.
Debian 9 ships with elarun and debian-elarun themes for example.
You may choose them from the System Settings / Startup and Shutdown section, or
by editing the /etc/sddm.conf file as administrator and changing / adding the
following section:

[Theme]
Current=$your_preferred_theme

where $your_preferred_theme should match one present in /usr/share/sddm/themes.
