#11491 — Use debhelper-compat instead of debian/compat

Hi,

according to debhelper man package it's recommended to use debhelper-compat
instead of debian/compat file.

I would like to mass-commit this change to DPMT/PAPT, example:

https://salsa.debian.org/python-team/modules/python-geoip2/commit/bc5ce34dd9bbfe3ecb7951aead267dbdaba3376a

Any thoughts?

Why not, it's a simple change and will get them all into line.

One question though, what happens if the package compat level is not the
latest?

debhelper currently Provides: debhelper-compat (= 9), debhelper-compat (= 10),
debhelper-compat (= 11), debhelper-compat (= 12).

So this change is safe to do for packages whose compat level is ≥ 9.

of course. I even check if d/compat and d/control have same version:

Only if you leave compat at the same value for the package. Don't mass update the value.

I wonder whether this is safe for backports and backports-sloppy.

Kind regards

Yes, stretch-backports already supported it, so clearly buster-bpo and
stretch-bpo-sl support it.
