#64522 — Bug#932854: Missing dependency for initramfs-tools-core

FromColin Booth <colin@heliocat.net>

SubjectBug#932854: Missing dependency for initramfs-tools-core
Message-ID<ynbBT-2bG-9@gated-at.bofh.it>
Package: initramfs-tools-core
Version: 0.133

The functions file shipped with initramfs-tools-core version 0.133 and
earlier contains a call to logsave(8) in the _checkfs_once() function.
The latest version of e2fsprogs (1.45.3-1) has removed logsave and it is
now shipped in a separate package. This causes a surprise drop into an
initramfs shell as the fsck line fails.

Please add a Depends: logsave in the next shipping version of
initramfs-tools-core or update the _checkfs_once function to not require
that program.

I can confirm this problem. After manually fsck the root partition and
still get the same initramfs shell I downgraded e2fsprogs and
libext2fs2 to the previous versions I found in /var/cache/apt/archives
(1.45.2-1) and the system booted again.

In order not to instantly break initramfs-tools and thus booting the
system, the new e2fsprogs package should have depended on logsave rather
than just suggesting it. See #932861 and friends.

ITSM that depending on logsave | e2fsprogs (<< 1.45.3) is sufficient, and
probably also necessary.

Cheers,
       Sven

Raising severity of this since it renders the machine unbootable.
