Package: src:linux
Version: 4.19.37-5
Severity: important

Dear Maintainer,

I did a clean install of buster to my Lenovo Thinkpad X131e-AMD, but the kernel
thinks the onboard Radeon HD 6310 is a newer card (newer than R600), requiring
firmware to support modeswitching (KMS). However, this is incorrect.

I did try, for good measure, installing the supposedly-appropriate firmware
package, but this was, of course, ineffective.

The only fix was to install the kernel from stretch. This machine worked on
stretch without a problem. This does allow X to be started, which the kernel
from buster prevents.

The problem is similar to bug #927219.

I would not expect the kernel to break my setup in this way. This is a clear
kernel regression.

The R600 /is/ newer than this card.. as R600 was code name for the HD 2000
series in 2007 and this card is an HD 6000 series from 2010 however, the
problem seems to be that the buster kernel 4.19 assumes that ALL cards
after this R600 in 2007 require firmware, when that doesn't seem to be true
in this case.

This is the drm output from the same machine running the stretch 4.9 and
the buster 4.19 kernels.. it shows in buster that immediately after drm
enables radeon KMS it does a radeon_pci_probe_ and errors out saying the
card requires firmware, but when booting 4.9 it continues and properly
loads the card and KMS successfully.. same system, same firmwares
available..

Furthermore upon searching, I see no evidence the 1002:9802 a.k.a HD 6310
a.k.a "Wrestler" has ever had firmware available.. it may have some sort
already on the card somewhere, but there are no firmwares matching that
pciid, codename, or model number anywhere that I can see.

Therefore a change yet to be identified by commit/line/author was made that
makes incorrect assumptions about radeon cards based on their age / date of
mfg.

#64437 — Bug#931901: Ping to Ben Hutchings, identifying possible source of problem

It would appear to my untrained eye, that this commit on May 15, 2018 by
Ben Hutchings is responsible for this issue:

https://salsa.debian.org/kernel-team/linux/commit/e7bdd24f189b1b8775665d56a1230f7b12915ffe

This appears to be debian specific and not an upstream issue as the
upstream code doesn't contain any such checks:

https://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/stable/linux.git/tree/drivers/gpu/drm/radeon/radeon_drv.c?h=v4.19.59#n340

It would appear this is an incorrect assumption to make, that all cards
newer than the R600 require firmware. I can't make out what this code is
doing without digging way deeper but I think this is what is causing this
issue. There would need to be an exception here or the patch would need to
be rolled back or came at from a different angle entirely.

No, this patch is much older than that.

I really don't think so.

I suspect that this bug is a duplicate of bug #928510, for which the
fix missed the buster release (but we can fix it in a point release).
If you run "update-initramfs -u" and reboot, does that fix the problem?

Ben.

Ah, that does indeed resolve the matter.

This was a strange one, to my eyes... but now I know what was really
going on. I now have X and the 4.19 kernel at the same time.

Many thanks for your efforts - hopefully I won't need to install on any
similar machines before this is fixed properly but I will treat this as
a "release note" if I do.

In this case, the card needs firmware, the firmware is on the disk,
but KMS remains disabled.
