SubjectBug#906189: linux-image-4.17.0-1-amd64: Laptop does not suspend in 4.17 - worked up to 4.16
Message-ID<wn1xf-6us-1@gated-at.bofh.it>
Package: src:linux
Version: 4.17.8-1
Severity: important

Dear Maintainer,

I am using Debian Sid. Since the upgrade to linux-image-4.17.x I cannot
suspend my Lenovo X230 laptop any more. I close the lid or run
"systemctl suspend" to suspend the laptop but the laptop's power LED
blinks and after a few seconds the laptop resumes automatically.
This effect is easily reproducible.

Booting into 4.16.0-2-amd64 works well.

Linux kernel image 4.17.0-2 shows the mentioned problem.

It appears the multiple people on the internet ran into this problem. I
did not find a workaround to this problem and will work with 4.16 now.

Package: src:linux
Version: 4.17.17-1
Followup-For: Bug #906189

Dear Maintainer,

I do see exactly the same behaviour on a Thinkpad X1 Carbon (Gen. 2).

Suspend works fine:
Linux slack 4.16.0-2-amd64 #1 SMP Debian 4.16.16-2 (2018-06-22) x86_64 GNU/Linux
Suspend works for the first time after reboot but then fails for all
following attempts:
Linux slack 4.17.0-1-amd64 #1 SMP Debian 4.17.8-1 (2018-07-20) x86_64 GNU/Linux
Linux slack 4.17.0-3-amd64 #1 SMP Debian 4.17.17-1 (2018-08-18) x86_64 GNU/Linux

Interesting enough the laptop immediately resumes when using:
# echo mem > /sys/power/state
But using
# echo mem > /sys/power/state;echo mem > /sys/power/state
it comes back on immediately after the first suspend and then
succesfully goes to sleep with the second try.

I had the same problem on my dell e7270, but it was fixed by a BIOS
upgrade. Something to try?

Has this been reported upstream (Bugzilla or an upstream mailing list)?

You didn't include any kernel log messages for the failed suspend,
which might help to explain this.

Ben.

This sounds like a job for git bisect:

I will try with bisect. Hass been a while that I compiled my kernel from
source. :)

I have not yet reported the problem to upstream mailing lists. Seems
though that the power optimizations added with kernel 4.17 would cause this.

Will report back.

git-bisect takes ages. I got this far yet:

- 4.16.0-2 = good
- 4.17.0-3 = bad
- 4.19.0-rc2 = good

Does it suffice to know that the problem does not occur any more with
kernel 4.19.0-rc2+?

I could continue with the "git bisect" but it would take days. :(

IMO, if the issue is not seen with 4.19, you may want to continue test
and ensure that, till the final 4.19 release.

Given that 4.19 is going to be the next LTS kernel, it is the one that
should end in Debian Buster, probably.
