SubjectBug#908924: dma_direct_map_sg: overflow on USB access after upgrade to kernel 4.18
Message-ID<wywR3-5et-1@gated-at.bofh.it>
Package: src:linux
Version: 4.18.6-1
Severity: important

Dear Maintainer,

Plugged my Kobo eReader's USB plug into a machine just upgraded from kernel
4.17 (4.17.17-1) to 4.18 (4.18.6-1), and got 112,738,316 kernel messages in the
the system log:

kernel: ehci-pci 0000:00:1a.7: dma_direct_map_sg: overflow
0x0000000216f3c000+4096 of device mask ffffffff

Downgrading to 4.17 fixes this.

Relevant lspci output:

00:1a.7 USB controller: Intel Corporation 82801I (ICH9 Family) USB2 EHCI
Controller #2 (rev 02) (prog-if 20 [EHCI])
Subsystem: Gigabyte Technology Co., Ltd 82801I (ICH9 Family) USB2 EHCI
Controller
Flags: bus master, medium devsel, latency 0, IRQ 18
        Memory at fb204000 (32-bit, non-prefetchable) [size=1K]
Capabilities: [50] Power Management version 2
        Kernel driver in use: ehci-pci
        Kernel modules: ehci_pci

Does the issue still happens with the current version in experimental
(4.19~rc3-1~exp1)?

I've also noticed what I'm pretty sure is the same bug --- that is, many
'ehci-pci 0000:00:12.2: dma_direct_map_sg: overflow 0x0000000162701000+4096 of device mask ffffffff'
messages

in testing upon upgrade to 4.18.0-1

Here's perhaps helpful lsusb and lspci corresponding to
a thinkpad x140e with some generic harddrive enclosure attached

    while running linux-image-4.14.0-3-686-pae
(because it doesn't produce this error)

chatter
-------

thanks for continuing to produce this universal (kobo to qemu)
operating system

my impression is that more recent linux kernel versions don't
support external usb harddrives as well as they used to:
my previous harddrive enclosure started to give errors upon
upgrade of the kernel major version, now minor versions
are causing errors with the current enclosure!

in all semi-seriousness, i have no idea what the issue is,
except that it does exist, and i hope the debian project can
continue to bridge kernel developers to commodity hardware users.
