Package: src:linux
Version: 4.16.12-1
Severity: important
Dear Maintainer,
after upgrading and rebooting to linux-image-4.16.0-2-amd64 4.16.12-1 my
sound card stop working in pulse audio (I'm using KDE as desktop).
ALSA can still see and use the card without problems, but pulse see no
cards.
If I reboot with the previous version (linux-image-4.16.0-2-amd64
4.16.12-1) all works as expected again without any further changes.
I haven't tried yet the new (unstable) version 4.16.16-2, but I will and
report back.
Here is the output of pacmd and aplay to list cards, devices, sinks.
Please let me know if there is anything else I can provide.
$ pacmd list-cards
0 card(s) available.
$ pacmd list-sinks
1 sink(s) available.

Hi, sorry for the spam, but this bug is unrelated to the kernel. It seems like the differences in kernels were just luck as the problem was a race condition; the sound card was "taken" by timidity before pulse could access it. Please feel free to close! -- Leandro Lucarella (Luca) https://llucax.com

Hello, I faced this very same issue today. googling this bug report was extremely useful: I deleted timidity, and now sound is back. Obviously this is no solution, as I (or someone else) will need timidity eventually. I understand this is not a kernel related issue, but it is still a serious issue anyway: timidity may grab the sound card at random moments, making sound unusable. I cannot tell who is actual package (timidity? systemd?) responsible for this nor how this can be corrected (maybe insert an extra delay before the timidity daemon is started?), but it sure requires a fix. So shouldn't this bug be reassigned rather than closed? Thanks! Best, Nick
