#60768 — Bug#897060: linux-image-4.15.0-3-amd64: System does not boot after upgrading to buster

FromJoris <joris.rau@tu-dresden.de>

SubjectBug#897060: linux-image-4.15.0-3-amd64: System does not boot after upgrading to buster
Message-ID<vJhxv-33y-1@gated-at.bofh.it>
Package: src:linux
Version: 4.15.17-1
Severity: critical
Justification: breaks the whole system

Dear Maintainer,

I upgraded to buster from stretch according to the wiki. I did abort the
configuration of minissdp by pressing Esc, when I was asked for the interface
IP. Upon reboot the screen stays black and I cannot use ctrl+alt+f[1-6] after I
decrypt my hard drive.

When booting in recovery mode from GRUB the system successfully boots (most of
the time).

The journal shows:
kernel: BUG: unable to handle kernel NULL pointer dereference at
0000000000000000
kernel: IP: (null)

Somehow my system now boots normally. I do not know what exactly I did
to make that happen.

The only error I am seeing now is:
"[drm:intel_cpu_fifo_underrun_irq_handler [i915]] *ERROR* CPU pipe B
FIFO underrun" . Also my minissdpd seems to fail but that is probably
unrelated. Since this bug does not seem to break anything I am okay with
closing this issue (if you agree that everything should be OK).

I'm having issues since the last kernel upgrade on my Cherrytrail
tablet, not sure if it's the kernel or possible mesa-related. Need to
dig into it some more. Booting normally just stalls after showing a
couple of console messages (about when GDM would normally show up).
Booting in rescue mode and then exiting out sometimes works, sometimes
not. But then screen rotation is broken and stuck in portrait mode (I
guess iio-sensor-proxy was started before the driver was ready in that
case). It also seems flaky and usually the GUI locks up after a while
also when booting up this way.

SubjectBug#897060: Some observations

Hello,

I have similar symptoms on a much older 32 bit laptop running sid.

My notes:

No problems with kernel 4.14 (I currently use 4.14.0-3-686-pae, aka 4.14.17-1).

All (Debian compiled) 4.15 and 4.16 I've tried are randomly affected (the very same kernel will sometimes boot OK, sometimes not).

When the graphical screen fails to come up, no key combination will restore the screen, but in fact the machine is running: SSHd works, and I can (blindly) login on tty2. "poweroff" kills SSHd, but the machine does not power down.

I suppose bisecting between 4.14 and 4.15 would be useful, but I'm not sure it's practical with a random kernel problem and a slow machine.

If there is anything else I can test, please ask.

Best regards,

Sebastien

The bug seems to be gone. I have not experienced it in a while and
waiting before entering my decryption key does not seem to do the trick
any longer.

Do you have information, starting from which kernel version is the
issue gone for you?

Sadly that was quite some time ago. I did not take notice of the exact
kernel versions. Any idea how I could examine that in a relatively fast way?

Which one are you running now? That would already help so we can mark
the fixed version even if we cannot right now exactly pinpoint. But
given you only experienced with a kernel ater than the one in stretch,
and seem to already fixed in your current running version it looks
safe enough for buster.

What can be done to to try to find a more accurate version: Do a
"bisect" on the released Debian revision by fetching the kernel from
snapshots.d.o.

Salvatore
