SubjectBug#879184: firmware-atheros: QCA6174 stops working on newer kernels after second group rekeying
Message-ID<uCzUK-PZ-5@gated-at.bofh.it>
Package: firmware-atheros
Version: 20170823-1
Severity: normal

Starting from linux 4.12, wifi silently stops working after the second WPA
group rekeying (see #875362):

oct. 19 19:35:43 vicious wpa_supplicant[868]: wlp58s0: CTRL-EVENT-CONNECTED -
Connection to 14:cc:20:56:eb:94 completed [id=0 id_str=]

completed with 14:cc:20:56:eb:94 [GTK=CCMP]

As hinted by [0], updating the following firmware files[1][2] fixes the issue:
/lib/firmware/ath10k/QCA6174/hw3.0/board-2.bin
/lib/firmware/ath10k/QCA6174/hw3.0/firmware-6.bin

#60006 — Bug#879184: Update QCA6174/hw3,0/firmware-6.bin

Hi!

This can be solved by replacing firmware-6.bin by the newest one from
the official repository:
https://github.com/kvalo/ath10k-firmware/tree/master/QCA6174/hw3.0/4.4.1
It was added about a month ago. See also this commit:
https://github.com/kvalo/ath10k-firmware/commit/7eb330e1e0f21f325f4f50a98922b3be04d43722
(which mentions a WPA-related issue).
I did this temporarily until the firmware-atheros package is updated.

After boot/module reload, the journal should report the new version (≥ 4.4.1-0079):

  > sudo journalctl --boot | grep WLAN.RM
  Jan 16 10:22:38 quantum kernel: ath10k_pci 0000:3a:00.0: firmware ver WLAN.RM.4.4.1-00079-QCARMSWPZ-1 api 6 features wowlan,ignore-otp crc32 fd869beb

For more details, see also this Arch forum post:
https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?pid=1737681#p1737681

Kind regards,
Paul
