Package: src:linux
Version: 4.9.65-3
Severity: important

Dear Maintainer,

Using linux-image-4.9.0-4-amd64 the display (X windows) will cut to black for a
second or two and then return. When this happens this is found in the dmesg
output:

[drm:gen8_irq_handler [i915]] *ERROR* CPU pipe B FIFO underrun

This error always show up in the logs the first time the cutout occurs after a
reboot. The display will continue to cutout occasionally without it, but it
will occasionally appear later as well coinciding with the cutout.

The only reliable 'fix' I've found is to revert to the previous Linux image. As
of now the cutout will happen with the new kernel reliably after a few hours
use whereas the old image has never displayed this problem.

This seems to be a regression with linux-image-4.9.0-4-amd64, as this does not
occur with linux-image-4.9.0-3-amd64. I've currently 'fixed' this issue by
reverting to linux-image-4.9.0-3-amd64.

Thanks.

Been running linux-image-4.13.0-0.bpo.1-amd64 (4.13.13-1~bpo9+1) for a few days
now without incident. So it seems free from the bug as well.

This bug makes my Lenovo laptop with Intel graphics essentially
unusable with the 4.9.0-4 kernel. The flickering is every few seconds
and some operations like maximizing a window can drive the screen to
flicker constantly. Downgrading to 4.9.0-3 solves the problem.

I can confirm this. For my Lenovo ThinkPad T450s with 2 external
monitors, it is exactly the same. Drove me nuts for the better part of a
day until I realized it was due to 4.9.0-4. As such I'm also back to
running 4.9.0-3 as a workaround.

In my case I would only* get the flickering (ie. the screen/monitor
goes blank for a sec or two) in the following scenario:

1) move mouse cursor inside of my GNOME Terminal window
2) use the keyboard to type something (anything)

*With the mouse cursor hovering outside of my term window, I was safe
so to say. Having said this, occasionally a monitor would also flicker
when moving the mouse cursor from one external monitor to another.

B/R,
Frederik Dannemare

Any word on this? I'm currently stuck deciding between having a usable computer
or an insecure one while waiting for the meltdown fix to make it into
backports.
