Message-ID<NV7BE-9tvH-1@gated-at.bofh.it>
Package: src:linux
Version: 6.12.115-2
Severity: normal
X-Debbugs-Cc: benjamin@wagnerbrutal.de

Dear Maintainer,

I am experiencing a reproducible USB audio regression with a MOTU M4 interface
on current Debian 13.

The interface has worked reliably for years. After rebooting into kernel
6.12.115+deb13.1-amd64, audio playback stopped working.

Booting the same system with kernel 6.12.113 restores normal operation. No
other configuration changes were made.

Hardware:
- CPU: AMD Ryzen 7 3700X
- USB controller: AMD Matisse USB 3.0 Host Controller [1022:149c]
- PCI address: 0000:0d:00.3
- Audio interface: MOTU M4 [07fd:000b]
- Device firmware: 2.05

Reproduction:

With PipeWire stopped, run:

speaker-test -D hw:0,0 -c 4 -r 48000 -F S32_LE -t sine

On kernel 6.12.115, playback fails with:

Write error: -5, Input/output error
xrun_recovery failed: -5
Write error: Input/output error

No audio is heard, and the MOTU M4 level meters show no activity.

The USB device enumerates normally, and ALSA recognizes the playback device. No
obvious USB errors appear in the kernel journal.

Kernel comparison:
- 6.12.111: working
- 6.12.113: working
- 6.12.115: broken
- 6.12.114: not tested

The problem occurs with direct ALSA playback, independently of PipeWire.

Best regards

Sorry about the breakage with the security update needed. As you can
cleary identify when system is regression, could you please bisect the
changes between 6.12.113 and 6.12.115 upstream with the following
procedure to identify the culprit please?

    git clone --single-branch -b linux-6.12.y https://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/stable/linux-stable.git
    cd linux-stable
    git checkout v6.12.113
    cp /boot/config-$(uname -r) .config
    yes '' | make localmodconfig
    make savedefconfig
    mv defconfig arch/x86/configs/my_defconfig

    # test 6.12.113 to ensure this is "good"
    make my_defconfig
    make -j $(nproc) bindeb-pkg
    ... install the resulting .deb package and confirm problem does not exist

    # test 6.12.115 to ensure this is "bad"
    git checkout v6.12.35
    make my_defconfig
    make -j $(nproc) bindeb-pkg
    ... install the resulting .deb package and confirm problem exists

With that confirmed, the bisection can start:

    git bisect start
    git bisect good v6.12.113
    git bisect bad v6.12.115

In each bisection step git checks out a state between the oldest
known-bad and the newest known-good commit. In each step test using:

    make my_defconfig
    make -j $(nproc) bindeb-pkg
    ... install, verify if problem exists

and if the problem is hit run:

    git bisect bad

and if the problem doesn't trigger run:

    git bisect good

. Please pay attention to always select the just built kernel for
booting, it won't always be the default kernel picked up by grub.

Iterate until git announces to have identified the first bad commit.

Then provide the output of

    git bisect log

In the course of the bisection you might have to uninstall previous
kernels again to not exhaust the disk space in /boot. Also in the end
uninstall all self-built kernels again.

Regards,
Salvatore

Hi Salvatore,

thanks a lot for the quick reply.

It really is an upstream problem. It works with the upstream 6.12.113
kernel but fails with 6.12.115.

I dissected it and only built about 10 kernels, haven't done this in
years ;)

     ALSA: usb-audio: Prevent excessive number of frames

     [ Upstream commit ef5749ef8b307bf8717945701b1b79d036af0a15 ]

     In this case, the user constructed the parameters with maxpacksize 40
     for rate 22050 / pps 1000, and packsize[0] 22 packsize[1] 23. The
buffer
     size for each data URB is maxpacksize * packets, which in this example
     is 40 * 6 = 240; When the user performs a write operation to send audio
     data into the ALSA PCM playback stream, the calculated number of frames
     is packsize[0] * packets = 264, which exceeds the allocated URB buffer
     size, triggering the out-of-bounds (OOB) issue reported by syzbot [1].

     Added a check for the number of single data URB frames when calculating
     the number of frames to prevent [1].

Dear Maintainer,

I am experiencing the same regression on Debian Trixie with
a different device model from the MOTU M-Series:
MOTU M2, hardware revision: 1, firmware version: 1.02 (latest).

- Working kernel version: 6.12.113+deb13-amd64

- Broken kernel version:  6.12.115+deb13.1-amd64

the M2 is recognized on the USB level, but as soon as audio streaming is
initiated, the driver deadlocks. In my case, running

    jackd -dalsa -dhw:1 -r48000 -p256 -n3

and then starting audacity results in a 5-second timeout:

JackPosixProcessSync::LockedTimedWait error usec = 5000000 err = Connection timed out
Driver is not running
Cannot create new client

Pipewire and pulseaudio were disabled. Testing with a smaller or larger
buffer size (-p 64 or -p 1024, respectively) does not change the
behavior. Booting back into 6.12.113 fixes the problem immediately.

CPU: Intel Core Ultra 7 255U
USB controller: Intel Corporation Arrow Lake USB 3.2 xHCI Controller

thanks,
Sebastian

Hello,

I would like to report that the same regression also affects my MOTU
M2 USB audio interface on Debian 13 stable.

My MOTU M2 works correctly with kernel:

	*
6.12.111+deb13-amd64

But audio playback fails with:

	*
6.12.115+deb13.1-amd64

The issue persists when using a different USB port.

The device is detected correctly by USB and ALSA:

	*
USB ID: 07fd:000b

	*
ALSA identifies the device as M2 USB-Audio.

With PipeWire stopped, running:

speaker-test -D hw:3,0 -c 2 -r 48000 -F S32_LE -t sine -f 440 -l 5

fails with:

Write error: -5, Input/output error

No sound is produced and the interface's level meters show no
activity.

Booting again with kernel 6.12.111 restores normal audio playback.

This suggests that the regression also affects the MOTU M2, not only
the M4.

Thank you.

Dear Maintainer,

I can independently confirm this regression on Debian 13 (Trixie) using a MOTU M2 audio interface.

Hardware:

Motherboard: MSI MAG B660 Tomahawk WiFi DDR4
CPU: Intel Core i7-12700
USB controller: Intel xHCI
Audio interface: MOTU M2 [07fd:000b]
USB audio driver: snd_usb_audio

Kernel comparison:

6.12.113+deb13-amd64: WORKING
6.12.115+deb13.1-amd64: BROKEN

The failure initially appeared following an upgrade from Debian 12 Bookworm, kernel version 6.1.54 to Debian 13 Trixie.
After extensive troubleshooting, I tried installing and booting Linux 6.12.113. Audio playback through the MOTU M2 was restored, without changing the Debian 13 userspace or audio configuration.

Symptoms under 6.12.115:

-ALSA successfully recognizes the MOTU M2, and PipeWire exposes the playback device.
-When the MOTU is selected as the default audio output, there is no sound from the monitor headphones or speakers.
-When selected as the default audio output, attempting to play videos in Firefox such as YouTube results in playback stalling indefinitely.
-Selecting my Bluetooth headphones or HDMI audio outputs restored normal YouTube playback.
-Switching the MOTU to PipeWire's Pro Audio profile allowed YouTube playback to proceed, but no audio is produced.
-Direct ALSA playback remains silent even after stopping PipeWire and WirePlumber.

Direct ALSA reproduction:

After stopping WirePlumber and PipeWire:

speaker-test -D plughw:3,0 -c 2 -r 48000 -t sine -f 440

The playback stream reports RUNNING, but the ALSA hardware pointer never advances.

Output of /proc/asound/card3/pcm0p/sub0/status:

state: RUNNING
delay: 48000
avail: 0
avail_max: 0
hw_ptr: 0
appl_ptr: 48000
The same values were observed after waiting several seconds.

Additional troubleshooting notes:

-Reloading snd_usb_audio with lowlatency=0 did not resolve the problem.
-Running ALSA capture simultaneously with playback using arecord and speaker-test did not cause hw_ptr to advance
-The MOTU's USB audio playback endpoint uses asynchronous transfers and implicit feedback.
-ALSA arecord recordings produce nonzero audio samples. A controlled input test showed an approximately 15.2 dB RMS increase on channel 2 (mic channel) when producing an input signal. Although playing the .wav file back through my headphones it sounded silent.
-The input meters on the MOTU M2 audio interface itself respond normally.
-No obvious USB audio errors were observed in the kernel logs during the playback failure.
-The M2 and M4 share USB vendor/product ID 07fd:000b, and this appears to be the same regression described in this report.

Thank you.
-Christopher Ludwin

#94764 — Bug#1152888: Regression: MOTU M4 USB audio playback fails with EIO on Linux 6.12.115 (works on 6.12.113)

SubjectBug#1152888: Regression: MOTU M4 USB audio playback fails with EIO on Linux 6.12.115 (works on 6.12.113)
Message-ID<NVzHz-9IYA-1@gated-at.bofh.it>
In reply to#94736
Hi,

I hit the same regression on a third device vendor. The bisect result in
this thread is the right culprit, and I think I can add the missing piece:
why this commit breaks exactly this class of devices, and why so many
different interfaces regressed at once.

Affected device here: Topping E2x2 (USB ID 152a:8752, XMOS/Thesycon
UAC2 implementation), connected at high speed.

Symptoms on linux-image-6.12.115+deb13.1-amd64 (6.12.115-2):

 - The card enumerates and binds to snd-usb-audio normally; there is not a
   single error in dmesg.
 - PipeWire/WirePlumber see it and it can be selected as the default sink.
 - The PCM opens, configures and triggers successfully:

     access: MMAP_INTERLEAVED, format: S32_LE, channels: 2, rate: 48000
     period_size: 512, buffer_size: 32768
     state: RUNNING

 - But nothing is ever transferred. While playing, sampled over 5 seconds:

     delay    : 4608   (constant)
     hw_ptr   : 0      (never advances)
     appl_ptr : 4608

   Not a single URB completes, and still no error is logged.
 - Booting 6.12.113-1 restores playback immediately.

This is the same picture as #1152963 (Audient iD4: "state: RUNNING, but
hw_ptr stays at 0"), and consistent with #1152962.

Why implicit-feedback devices are the ones affected

The bad commit, ef5749ef8b30 ("ALSA: usb-audio: Prevent excessive number of
frames"), added this to prepare_playback_urb() in sound/usb/pcm.c:

    counts = snd_usb_endpoint_next_packet_size(ep, ctx, i, avail);
    if (counts < 0 || frames + counts >= ep->max_urb_frames)
            break;

However ep->max_urb_frames is assigned in only one branch of
snd_usb_endpoint_set_params() (sound/usb/endpoint.c):

    if (usb_pipein(ep->pipe) || ep->implicit_fb_sync) {
            ...
            ep->nurbs = MAX_URBS;
            /* ep->max_urb_frames is NOT initialized here */
    } else {
            ...
            ep->max_urb_frames = DIV_ROUND_UP(ep->cur_period_frames,
                                              urbs_per_period);
    }

A playback endpoint driven by implicit feedback (usb_pipein() false and
implicit_fb_sync true; see snd_usb_endpoint_implicit_feedback_sink())
takes the first branch, so ep->max_urb_frames keeps its kzalloc() value of
zero. The new condition then degenerates to "frames + counts >= 0", which
is always true, so the loop breaks at i == 0, frames stays 0, and the
function returns -EAGAIN:

    if (!frames) {
            err = -EAGAIN;
            goto unlock;
    }

No URB is ever submitted. Playback is dead silent, and nothing is printed
to dmesg, because -EAGAIN here is the normal retry path.

This also explains the spread of the reports: every interface whose
playback endpoint uses implicit feedback regressed, regardless of vendor
(MOTU, Audient, Behringer, Topping, ...), while devices that do not use it
are unaffected. It may also explain why different reports show different
low-level errors (EIO/EPIPE in #1152888, a plain hang in #1152963) - same
code path, different manifestation.

The fix is already upstream

    70b4db7d2581 "ALSA: usb-audio: Use the right limit for PCM OOB check"
    (Takashi Iwai, 2026-01-21, eight days after ef5749ef8b30)

which replaces the ep->max_urb_frames test with a bound based on the real
buffer:

    if (counts < 0 ||
        (frames + counts) * stride > ctx->buffer_size)
            break;

06be918062ad ("Bound packet copies by the PCM buffer size", 2026-10-26)
later adds subs->buffer_bytes as a second bound.

Debian 6.12.115-2 appears to carry ef5749ef8b30 but not its immediate
follow-up. I verified this against the shipped binaries: unpacking
snd-usb-audio.ko.xz from both installed kernels and comparing symbol sizes,
prepare_playback_urb() is the only function that changed between 6.12.113
and 6.12.115 (1630 -> 1653 bytes), and its disassembly contains the
ep->max_urb_frames comparison.

For 6.12.y, if ctx->buffer_size is not available there (I could not find it
in 6.12.115's pcm.c), subs->buffer_bytes already exists and gives an
equivalent bound; alternatively the check can simply be skipped when
ep->max_urb_frames is zero.

Happy to test a candidate kernel build.

Side note: I do not think #1152914 is the same issue - that one fails during
probe ("clock source 41 is not valid") rather than after streaming starts.

Note: the root cause analysis above was carried out jointly by the reporter
and an LLM-based assistant, and was verified against the shipped Debian
kernel binaries and the corresponding upstream sources.

Thanks,
smg <smgdream@foxmail.com>

In reply to#94736
Hi Salvatore,

answering the question from your Message #42: yes, 70b4db7d2581 on top of
6.12.115-2 fixes it. Confirmed on real hardware, and on a device from a
different vendor (Topping, not MOTU).

  Device: Topping E2x2, USB ID 152a:8752 (XMOS/Thesycon UAC2)
  Playback endpoint 0x01 (OUT, ASYNC), implicit feedback via EP 0x81

How it was built

I rebuilt only sound/usb/snd-usb-audio.ko, against the Debian 6.12.115-2
configuration and the Module.symvers shipped in
linux-headers-6.12.115+deb13.1-amd64, using gcc-14, the same compiler
Debian used for this kernel. The resulting module has an identical
vermagic:

    6.12.115+deb13.1-amd64 SMP preempt mod_unload modversions

Baseline sanity check: built *without* the patch, prepare_playback_urb()
comes out at exactly the same size as in the shipped module (1653 bytes),
so the build environment reproduces Debian's build. With the patch applied
it is 1646 bytes, and the disassembly contains:

    imul   %r10d,%edx
    cmp    %edx,0x8(%r12)

i.e. (frames + counts) * stride compared against ctx->buffer_size.

A correction to my previous message

I wrote that ctx->buffer_size might not exist in 6.12.y. That was wrong.
It does exist - struct snd_urb_ctx in sound/usb/card.h has:

    unsigned int buffer_size; /* size of data buffer, if data URB */

and it is assigned unconditionally in data_ep_set_params() in
sound/usb/endpoint.c:

    u->buffer_size = maxsize * u->packets;

That line is outside the "if (usb_pipein(ep->pipe) || ep->implicit_fb_sync)"
branch, so the value is valid for capture, implicit-feedback playback and
plain playback alike. Consequently 70b4db7d2581 applies to 6.12.y as-is.
No substitute such as subs->buffer_bytes is needed.

Before / after

Before (6.12.115-2, stock module), while playing:

    state: RUNNING
    delay    : 4608    (constant)
    hw_ptr   : 0       (never advances)
    appl_ptr : 4608

After (6.12.115-2 + 70b4db7d2581), while playing:

    state: RUNNING
    delay    : 7222
    hw_ptr   : 701497
    appl_ptr : 708630

hw_ptr advances continuously and the output is audible again.

Disclosure: I worked on this together with an LLM-based assistant. It
helped with the source analysis, with preparing the module build and
with drafting this message. I reviewed all of it, and I ran the builds
and the hardware tests myself on the machine described above; the
measurements quoted here come from my own system.

Thanks,
smg <smgdream@foxmail.com>

After compiling and booting into that kernel, the sound works!

I can confirm that 70b4db7d2581 solves the issue with the MOTU M2.

For the record, here is what I did:

In each step, testing means:

In one shell:
jackd -dalsa -dhw:1 -r48000 -p256 -n3

In a second shell:
audacity

Test is successful, if I can record and playback my voice.

Test is not successful, if I cannot record/play and jackd displays:
    JackPosixProcessSync::LockedTimedWait error usec = 5000000 err =
    Connection timed out

Step 1: verify again that with Debian kernel 6.12.113+deb13-amd64
the test is successful

Step 2: verify again that with Debian kernel 6.12.115+deb13.1-amd64
the test is not successful

Step 3: build a kernel from the sources without the patch,
the test is not successful
