SubjectBug#1151843: linux-image-6.1.0-54-amd64: DCF77 Doesn't work after kernel update.
Message-ID<NRu3L-7sDn-1@gated-at.bofh.it>
Package: src:linux
Version: 6.1.190-1
Severity: normal

Dear Maintainer,

I Use a MosChip 9845 serial card. The first serial port on this card is
connected to a Conrad DCF77 receiver. With kernel 6.1.0-54-amd64 the
receiver doesn't work; With errors like 'INCOMPLETE DATA - time code only
has 3 bits' and 'parity check FAILED for'. Errors like these are usually
the result of radio interference. However, A RS232 tester (with red and
green LEDs) shows no erratic flashing.

I kind of tried but failed to replicate these errors.
A null modem cable with two instances of Minicom just works. It also works
with a low baud rate (300) and settings similar to that of NTPDs DCF
driver: 8 bits and even parity.
I just happened to have some simple serial port software that I modified to
run at 50 baud, 8 bits and even parity. Sending one byte ASCII per second
also works. Even binary data works.

Dumping the data from the DCF receiver to a file is an other story.
With an older kernel I get 0x00 (200 ms pulse) or 0xf0 (100 ms pulse), one
per second.
With kernel 6.1.0-54-amd64 I get much more data. As if the same data
is being read over and over again.

Kind regards,
Rob

Hi there

A little update:
I still haven't been able to replicate this problem in any other way than
hookup up the DCF77 receiver to the multi serial card.
However, using Minicom to send ASCII data (which just works) and then
hooking up the DCF77 receiver, shows ASCII when there should only be
binary data. As if old data from a buffer is being flushed.

I noticed a change in /usr/src/linux/drivers/tty/serial/8250/8250_port.c;

   /*
    * Recover from no-data-ready and FIFO error condition to avoid getting
    * stuck in the ISR.
    */
    if (!(status & UART_LSR_DR) && (status & UART_LSR_FIFOE))
      serial8250_clear_and_reinit_fifos(up);

Flushing the FIFO when this really should happen would probably result
in the experienced behaviour. It is perfectly normal for a DCF77 receiver
to produce a continuous stream of breaks, framing- and parity errors and
the software should just ignore these.
I will try to build a kernel without this change. I haven't build a kernel
since the 1990's, so this may take some time to figure out.
If this works I will try to modify the above change.

Regards,
Rob
