Dear Maintainer,

Updating to the recently available 6.12.88+deb13-amd64 I've noticed that
bluetooth is no longer working. It previously used to work on
6.12.86+deb13-amd64 and earlier. The logs say "hci0: Failed to send wmt func
ctrl (-22)", and it looks like a regression in the bluetooth driver for
Mediatek MT7921:

https://lore.kernel.org/linux-bluetooth/5i35wmc4z7sz54jo5uj6ywext2enh4ik3oxmfmperqk2v5kc27@ppvm6oodzipn/

likely caused by:

Bluetooth: btmtk: validate WMT event SKB length before struct access

(which can indeed be seen in the changelog for 6.12.88+deb13-amd64)

I dug into the follow-up to that bug, and there's a patch
that's been merged to bluetooth-next [1]. I'm not feeling
quite motivated right now to recompile and check that this
fixes the issue for me, but someone else might.

Best,
Antonio

Followup-For: Bug #1136790
X-Debbugs-Cc: sb@dod.no

Dear Maintainer,

   * What led up to the situation?
Using "apt update" followed by "apt full-upgrade" which upgraded kernel
6.12.86-1 from stable-security with 6.12.88-1 from stable-security
   * What exactly did you do (or not do) that was effective (or
     ineffective)?
After reboot and after logging into the MATE desktop the MX Master mouse failed
to reconnect.

Ineffective first:
Checked the demesg messages about bluetooth and saw that there were fewer
messages than when things were working.

Tried rfkill to unblock bluetooth, but unblocking softblocked bluetooth failed
to make bluetooth working.

Did a full shutdown instead of a reboot, left it down for a while and then
booted. Bluetooth was still not working.

Effective:
Rebooted into the previous stable-security kernel version 6.12.86-1
   * What was the outcome of this action?

Rebooting into kernel 6.12.86-1 made bluetooth working again
   * What outcome did you expect instead?

I expected bluetooth to work in kernel 6.12.88-1

Package: src:linux
Followup-For: Bug #1136790

Dear Maintainer,

I am also affected by this bug, but running a slightly different device.

$ LANG=C journalctl -b -1 --grep 'hci0' --no-hostname --utc
May 16 08:00:36 kernel: Bluetooth: hci0: HW/SW Version: 0x008a008a, Build Time: 20241106163512
May 16 08:00:36 kernel: Bluetooth: hci0: Failed to send wmt func ctrl (-22)
May 16 08:00:36 kernel: Bluetooth: hci0: HCI Enhanced Setup Synchronous Connection command is advertised, but not supported.

# grep -s . /sys/class/bluetooth/hci?/device/../id*
/sys/class/bluetooth/hci0/device/../idProduct:3568
/sys/class/bluetooth/hci0/device/../idVendor:13d3

$ grep 13d3 /usr/share/misc/usb.ids
13d3 IMC Networks

Support for this bluetooth radio was added in commit c69ecb0ea4c96 (so don't get confused by the manufacturer being "IMC Networks")

Reverting back to 6.12.85+deb13-amd64 makes the device work again.

Let me know if there is anything else you need to know.

Hello,

The bug has "Fixed in versions linux/7.1~rc4-1~exp2, linux/7.0.9-1" tags.
Does it mean that there are no plans to fix this issue for the Debian
stable (trixie) branch kernel 6.12.x?

Kind regards,

Alexander

Hi Alexander,

I think I found the fix upstream here:

https://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/stable/linux.git/commit/?h=linux-6.12.y&id=0df9f458111481c0a9523b08171c97a61e026ec9

which was included in 6.12.91. So we should get it eventually.

Jared
