Package: linux-image-6.12.38+deb13-amd64
Version: 6.12.38-1

Module from the subject is absent in the debian trixie default kernel.

It was presented in all debian distribution default kernels before.

For example it was in debian bookworm and in more old debian distributions.
(before dist-upgrade)
$ grep -i CONFIG_MD_LINEAR /boot/config-6.1.0-37-amd64
CONFIG_MD_LINEAR=m

But it is absent in debian trixie default kernel (6.12.38+deb13-amd64):
(after dist-upgrade)
$ grep -i MD_LINEAR /boot/config-$(uname -r)
# CONFIG_MD_LINEAR is not set

Could you bring it back please?

I realize that I can compile it, but I don't want to do it each time I
need to upgrade the kernel version.

I am trying to use Debian GNU/Linux 13, kernel 6.12.38+deb13-amd64 and
libc6 2.41-12.

Best regards,
   IG

MD_LINEAR was marked as deprecated for a long time and then removed in
6.8-rc1 with 849d18e27be9 ("md: Remove deprecated CONFIG_MD_LINEAR")
and then later due to people with use cases needing it, reintroduce
(at least temporarily for a couple of releases) with 6.14-rc1 (and
backported to 6.13.3 and 6.12.14), with 127186cfb184 ("md: reintroduce
md-linear").

Cf. https://git.kernel.org/linus/127186cfb184eaccdfe948e6da66940cfa03efc5

Now, can you briefly describe the use case you have which cannot be
covered by switching to dm-linear?

https://www.kernel.org/doc/html/latest/admin-guide/device-mapper/linear.html

Thanks already,

Regards,
Salvatore

Hello Salvatore.

    Thank you for your quick reply.
    So it appears that it's not a debian kernel build config bug; this
change was made in the kernel repo not only in debian.
    Thank you for the actual links to MD_LINEAR removal description on site
kernel.org.

    We can close this discussion branch then.
    I don't think we should go deeply into my case. I'm going to find the
solution for it.

Best regards,
IG

Hello.

We are using the next disk setup on some of our servers:
mdadm raid (concatenation (16Tb x4) and mirror (16Tb x2) ) -> cryptsetup ->
lvm in each of them.
After updating debian to trixie on one of those servers I've noticed that
mdadm raid1(mirror) md-s worked well but I could not decrypt md-s that use
the md_linear kernel module.
Luckily, I don't have the root partition on those raids (It is located on
an additional separated ssd disk) and the servers can start successfully.
So at this moment I've reverted to kernel 6.1(from bookworm debian version)
to restore the data storage functionality and trying to find the solution
for data migration from mdadm to dmraid or maybe lvm or something else.
After quick googling I think dmraid (dm-linear can cover my case / can
create disk concatenations, but I still need to migrate a lot of data to
the new raid structure %( ).
(Earlier I thought that mdadm won dmraid in "software raid battles .... ").

Best Regards,
     IG.

Sorry for the late followup. I will close the issue then, as we aim
not to re-enable it given it should be for good deprecated.

I just want to make one comment: I really meant device mapper linear
target, not dmraid.

dmraid is gone, it should not be used anymore, so please don't look
for solutions involving dmraid (but maybe we just got naming
missunderstandings here).

FWIW, cf. https://bugs.debian.org/1056944

Salvatore
