Dear Maintainer,
*** Reporter, please consider answering these questions, where appropriate ***
* What led up to the situation?
I was running Debian 12 on this system fine for over a year. On 2025-09-10 I
did an `apt upgrade` that installed among other things
linux-image-6.1.0-39-amd64 and rebooted afterwards.
until I did an apt upgrade that installed linux-image-6.1.0-39-amd64. Using
this kernel the system hangs after GRUB. It displays the message: hub
[something] config failed, hub doesn't have any ports! (err -19). Apologies I
dont remember the [something] part. The lines is followed by a (normal) line
about root filesystem check. After these to lines the boot process hangs
indefinitely (tried three times). I could bring the system back to live by
going into the Grub menu an booting 6.1.0-37-amd64, which is running fine while
I type this. It looks like there was a regression between 6.1.0-37-amd64 and
6.1.0-39-amd64.
* What exactly did you do (or not do) that was effective (or
ineffective)?
After booting the freshly updated system with 6.1.0-39-amd64, the system hang
at boot. The only effective workaround I found was booting up the previous
kernel 6.1.0-37-amd64 which works fine and which I'm writing this report on.
* What was the outcome of this action?
The `apt upgrade` installed 6.1.0-39-amd64 which made the system hang at boot.
After Grub, it displays the message: "hub [something] config failed, hub doesn't
have any ports! (err -19)". Apologies I dont remember the [something] part. The
lines is followed by a (normal) line about root filesystem check. After these to
lines the boot process hangs indefinitely (tried three times).
The workaround was going into the Grub menu and boot 6.1.0-37-amd64 which works fine.
* What outcome did you expect instead?
I expected the `apt upgrade`, which resulted in installing 6.1.0-39-amd64, to
just work.

Hi Kathara, sorry for the delay, I just now saw your reply. I currently have these installed $ dpkg --list | grep linux-image ii linux-image-6.1.0-29-amd64 6.1.123-1 amd64 Linux 6.1 for 64-bit PCs (signed) ii linux-image-6.1.0-31-amd64 6.1.128-1 amd64 Linux 6.1 for 64-bit PCs (signed) ii linux-image-6.1.0-37-amd64 6.1.140-1 amd64 Linux 6.1 for 64-bit PCs (signed) ii linux-image-6.1.0-39-amd64 6.1.148-1 amd64 Linux 6.1 for 64-bit PCs (signed) ii linux-image-amd64 6.1.148-1 amd64 Linux for 64-bit PCs (meta-package) As reported, linux-image-6.1.0-37-amd64 6.1.140-1 works and linux-image-6.1.0-39-amd64 6.1.148-1 hangs. I understand 6.1.147-1 is one that was released in between. But, I don't have that one. Could you please tell me the `apt` command to install 6.1.147-1 in a way it gets added to the list so I can pick it in Grub (but NOT remove 6.1.140-1 so I can keep using the machine)? I can then proceed to test 6.1.147-1 and make a photo of 6.1.148-1. Thank you, Chris.

It stays the same as in the last photo (as a matter of fact the PC has been up since I took that photo). - systemctl start getty@tty4.service Before trying this command, I checked: # systemctl list-units | grep getty getty@tty1.service loaded active running Getty on tty1 getty@tty4.service loaded active running Getty on tty4 system-getty.slice loaded active active Slice /system/getty getty.target (some spaces removed by me) After executing the command, the screen still didn't change. Not even after trying with "restart" instead of "start". Thanks, Bye, Chris.

What about > > echo "Debian is great" > /dev/tty1 > > ? Hi Uwe, tried all three, nothing changes the stuck screen as shown on the attached VGA monitor: - `echo t > /proc/sysrq-trigger` doesn't show on the monitor, but shows debug log correctly in the dmesg output, - `echo "Debian is great" > /dev/tty1` doesn't show on the monitor, - pressing Alt+PrtSc+t doesn't show on the monitor and logs 'sysrq: This sysrq operation is disabled.' in the dmesg output. Please excuse if I repeat information: The kernels that works fine (up to 6.1.0-37-amd64), show the boot log and then at some point visibly change the screen resolution, the font gets visibly thinner, the screen is cleared and the text-login prompt appears. Later kernels (from 6.1.0-39-amd64 and what I'm using right now 6.1.0-40-amd64) freeze the screen at exactly the moment that switch occurs. To me, it looks like whatever that switch does, just completely freezes screen output. But, what was logged up to that point stays on screen indefinitely (as in the photo). It's not that the screen blanks because somehow the VGA signal is wrong or lost, it keeps on showing that last screen content frozen in time. Thanks and Bye, Chris.

> I think the most useful way forward would be to bisect that problem. > [...] > (Some thoughts I had before considering that bisecting is the right > thing to do: Your machine has two VGA adapters, which is the relevant? > [...] Hi Uwe, thanks for the detailed instructions. I looked into this a bit today. First of all I tried to connect different monitors and/or two monitors at the same time and can confirm the problem appears to be uninfluenced by that. Only one of the video outputs is active after linux boots (so it's not that the missing console just moved to the other screen). Then I find a *workaround* (not a fix) that works for me: I've just installed xfce4 and lightdm, which gave me a perfectly working graphical console. This is a server, and I needed a console just as a fall-back anyway to access the machine in case of network problems, which the graphical console is fine for. Out of curiosity CTRL-ALT-F1..F6 still does not bring up a text console. While on F1-F6 The screen keeps on showing the F7-X11 screen, but the mouse cursor disappears. CTRL-ALT-F7 then brings back the mouse cursor, all good. As this workaround works for me, I'm sorry to say I will not pursue the git bisecting tests which would consist in more work I can afford at this time. Again, I appreciated your answers and suggestions, both Uwe and Kathara. Thanks, Chris.
