Source: linux Severity: important Dear Maintainer, A new Dell Pro 14 Plus PB14255 laptop was installed with Debian 13.1. System works mostly, except for no sound and no webcam. An installation on same laptop with Ubuntu 24.04 did have sound, and among loaded modules reports soundwire-amd. This module is absent from the Debian kernel. Comparing the Config files in /boot, it seems that the setting CONFIG_SOUNDWIRE_AMD=m is missing. I intend to rebuild the kernel with this setting to see if this is indeed a remedy. But in the mean time I think it makes sense to build the module by default. -- System Information: Debian Release: 13.1 APT prefers stable-updates APT policy: (500, 'stable-updates'), (500, 'stable-security'), (500, 'stable') Architecture: amd64 (x86_64) Kernel: Linux 6.12.43+deb13-amd64 (SMP w/12 CPU threads; PREEMPT) Locale: LANG=nl_NL.UTF-8, LC_CTYPE=nl_NL.UTF-8 (charmap=UTF-8), LANGUAGE not set Shell: /bin/sh linked to /usr/bin/dash Init: systemd (via /run/systemd/system) LSM: AppArmor: enabled

Once you can confirm this is neough to solve your problem, can you please report back here and remove the moreinfo tag please? Regards, Salvatore

There is a related/simliar request in #1120479, where the reporter found a minimal config change working for its case, see message 21 there. Can you double-check if that covers as well a minimal config change working for your case? Regards, Salvatore

Hi I also have Dell Pro 14 Plus PB14255 laptop. I managed to get sound working in Debian by recompiling kernel package with these additional settings: CONFIG_SND_SOC_AMD_SOF_SDW_MACH=m CONFIG_SND_SOC_AMD_LEGACY_SDW_MACH=m CONFIG_SOUNDWIRE_AMD=m The first one is not needed for this specific hardware, as the associated module snd_acp_sdw_sof_mach is not used, but may be useful for other hardware. Remaining two options are necessary, as both snd_acp_sdw_legacy_mach and soundwire_amd modules are required in order I used kernel 6.17.13+deb13 from trixie-backports. I plan to try it also with the regular 6.12.57+deb13 version from trixie. So i think the minimum config change from message 21 in #1120479 should cover this hardware. -- Ondrej 'Santiago' Zajicek (email: santiago@crfreenet.org)
