Version: 6.1.106-3
Severity: normal

Dear Maintainer,

*** Reporter, please consider answering these questions, where appropriate ***

   * What led up to the situation? Changing AMD graphic/sound controller board. Sound play back was audible but marred by constant crakcs every few seconds.
   * What exactly did you do (or not do) that was effective (or
     ineffective)?
Selecting kernel 6.1.0-23 instead of 6.1.0-25 at boot allows to have fine sound playback through HDMI.
   * What was the outcome of this action?
Sound works when falling back to previous versions.
   * What outcome did you expect instead? Current kernel should enable correct sound playback through HDMI.

In addition, I tried the current bookworm-backports version,
6.10.6-1~bpo12+1.

The problem is found in this version too.

As a workaround, I default boot in 6.1.0-23 for now, but of course it's
a problem as it deprives me from security fixes.

Thanks for all your work.

Since you seem to easily have the effect reproducible with your
hardware, and can determine if a version between 6.1.99 and 6.1.106
upstream would be affected, can you bisect the changes to identify
which is the commit introducing the issue?

Salvatore

Indeed, reproducing is easy. I have begun bisecting, will report back
when it is finished (the box taks quite a bit of time for each kernel
build).

The bisect is complete and yields this result

15115033f056cbd7649b8e1806287f71bdb7ce5c is the first bad commit
commit 15115033f056cbd7649b8e1806287f71bdb7ce5c
Author: Maciej Fijalkowski <maciej.fijalkowski@intel.com>
Date:   Fri Jul 26 20:17:10 2024 +0200

ice: don't busy wait for Rx queue disable in ice_qp_dis()

     [ Upstream commit 1ff72a2f67791cd4ddad19ed830445f57b30e992 ]

When ice driver is spammed with multiple xdpsock instances and flow
control is enabled, there are cases when Rx queue gets stuck and unable
to reflect the disable state in QRX_CTRL register. Similar issue has
previously been addressed in commit 13a6233b033f ("ice: Add support to
enable/disable all Rx queues before waiting").

To workaround this, let us simply not wait for a disabled state as
later
patch will make sure that regardless of the encountered error in the
process of disabling a queue pair, the Rx queue will be enabled.

Fixes: 2d4238f55697 ("ice: Add support for AF_XDP")

I posted too early ... looking back I found that nonsensical. Turns out on that last commit I had made a mistake. I suspect I booted on the wrong kernel that time.
I'll redo the last few rounds and post only after checking that the "first bad commit" indeed is bad.
Sorry for the noise

No problem, and thanks for the update. Yes I was confused once I saw
your mail and did not saw a relation of this to your HDMI sound issue.

Thanks for your time investing into debugging this issue.

Awesome, thanks for the bisect.

Let's see how we can move from here on to report it to upstream with
your case.

I just have reported the issue upstream including the regression list,

Now, that one make a lot more sense (even though I wouldn't know how to handle
this, it is clearly related) :

92afcc310038ebe5d66c689bb0bf418f5451201c is the first bad commit
commit 92afcc310038ebe5d66c689bb0bf418f5451201c
Author: Takashi Iwai <tiwai@suse.de>
Date:   Wed Jul 31 19:05:15 2024 +0200

ALSA: hda: Conditionally use snooping for AMD HDMI

    [ Upstream commit 478689b5990deb626a0b3f1ebf165979914d6be4 ]

The recent regression report revealed that the use of WC pages for AMD
HDMI device together with AMD IOMMU leads to unexpected truncation or
noises.  The issue seems triggered by the change in the kernel core
memory allocation that enables IOMMU driver to use always S/G
buffers.  Meanwhile, the use of WC pages has been a workaround for the
similar issue with standard pages in the past.  So, now we need to
apply the workaround conditionally, namely, only when IOMMU isn't in
    place.

This patch modifies the workaround code to check the DMA ops at first
and apply the snoop-off only when needed.

    Fixes: f5ff79fddf0e ("dma-mapping: remove CONFIG_DMA_REMAP")

Hello,

I've noticed this bug as well. I find it notable that I'm also using an
AMD GCN-era GPU (in my case, an RX 480). I can also confirm that
6.1.0-23 is good and 6.1.0-25 is bad.

I tried to reproduce this by cloning the source from kernel.org and
checking out 6.1.106, but the problem doesn't seem to happen when using
the upstream 6.1.106 source. This suggests to me it's probably an
interaction between a Debian patch and an upstream change.

How should I go about figuring out what change caused it? Normally I'd
just bisect it, but that doesn't apply straightforwardly here.

(additional information below)

Thanks,

Skye (they/them)

Hello,

I've read through this thread and I see you've already bisected this.
If I get the time, I'll test with that patch reverted. Thanks for doing
the work to figure this out. Apologies for not reading the thread.

Thanks,

Skye (they/them)

Hi !

I saw the request to test with 6.12-rc1. I tried that, but probably did
something wrong because it fails to boot (looks like it happens when
switching to fb console).

I have not managed to get any message (and it's a different subject
anyway), because the system, while responsive (keyboard lights respond
to numlock/capslock), is not accessible to me (not reachable through
SSH, and that's about as far as I can try to reach it).

I might have done something wrong, I did see some .config warnings, I'll
try to dig a bit more later in the week if I can find the time.

Regards

Eric

FWIW, a patch reverting the breaking commit has been submitted by
Takashi Iwai, and so will go back to the stable series as well later.

Salvatore

OK, good !
Meanwhile, I've built a kernel from version 6.1.112 (matches 6.1.0-26 if
I get things right) with the commit reverted. 6.1.112 itself has the
sound problem, like 6.1.0-26, which is no surprise.

The kernel from 6.1.112 with commit
92afcc310038ebe5d66c689bb0bf418f5451201c reverted plays sound correctly
over HDMI, so I'll do this as a workaround until the reverting patch
reaches stable.

Thank you
