SubjectBug#1079150: cryptsetop: Waiting for encrypted source device
Message-ID<JdxSh-6lxL-1@gated-at.bofh.it>
Package: src:linux
Version: 6.9.12-1
Severity: critical
Justification: breaks the whole system
X-Debbugs-Cc: alx@kernel.org

Dear Maintainer,

I ran `apt-get upgrade` earlier today. I rebooted, since the update
had a new kernel, and the system wouldn't boot with the new kernel.
My old kernel was 6.9.7-amd64, which worked fine.
The new kernel is 6.9.12-amd64. Here's what I see when booting with the
new kernel:

cryptsetup: Waiting for encrypted source device UUID=8[...]...
mdadm: No devices listed in conf file were found.
mdadm: No devices listed in conf file were found.

[...] is the remaining of the UUID.
The above 3 lines repeat for several times, and then comes the
following:

Gave up waiting for root file system device. Common problems:
	  - Boot args (cat /proc/cmdline)
	    - Check rootdelay= (did the system wait long enough?)
	  - Missing modules (cat /proc/modules; ls /dev)
ALERT! UUID=0[...] does not exist. Dropping to a shell!

I copied these errors with pencil and paper, so it may have small typos.
One thing to notice is that the UUID that cryptsetup wait for starts
with an 8, but the ALERT message reports about one that starts with a 0.

I can't boot the system anymore. I've also dist-upgraded to
6.10.4-amd64 to see if it solved the problem, but it was also broken.
I'm currently running the old kernel.

I installed Debian on an encrypted partition (following the Debian
Installer; nothing custom).

Have a lovely day!
Alex

#83540 — Bug#1079150: cryptsetup: Waiting for encrypted source device

SubjectBug#1079150: cryptsetup: Waiting for encrypted source device
Message-ID<JdyY1-6m9I-7@gated-at.bofh.it>
In reply to#83539
By the way,

I forgot to tell that I experimented the bug in kernel images: 6.10.4
and 6.9.12.

But, kernel image 6.9.9 seems to behave properly (at least for my laptop
with hardware low-level encryption).

Regards

Should I report this bug also against linux-image-amd64, or against the
newer version, or is that automatically migrated?

Cheers,
Alex

I've purged 6.9.12, but I keep 6.10.4 --which is also broken--, so I've
run it with that:

	$ lsinitramfs /boot/initrd.img-6.10.4-amd64 \
	| grep /lib/modules | head;
	usr/lib/modules
	usr/lib/modules/6.10.4-amd64
	usr/lib/modules/6.10.4-amd64/kernel

	usr/lib/modules/6.10.4-amd64/kernel/drivers/input/mouse/psmouse.ko
	usr/lib/modules/6.10.4-amd64/kernel/drivers/net

and just for comparison, here's with a kernel that works:

	$ lsinitramfs /boot/initrd.img-6.9.7-amd64 \
	| grep /lib/modules | head;
	usr/lib/modules
	usr/lib/modules/6.9.7-amd64

	usr/lib/modules/6.9.7-amd64/kernel/arch
	usr/lib/modules/6.9.7-amd64/kernel/arch/x86
	usr/lib/modules/6.9.7-amd64/kernel/arch/x86/crypto

I think this is bug #1079022 (breakage of dracut-install) together with
bug #1079066 (missing check for failure of dracut-install).

Does "update-initramfs -u -k 6.10.4-amd64" show errors from dracut-
install? And if not, does it now produce a working initramfs?

Ben.

OK, so this is a bug I've just fixed (in version 0.144).

I've tried upgrading just now (`apt-get upgrade`), and had some error.
I've rebooted just in case that would fix it, and then tried to
`apt-get --fix-broken install`, but the error remains:

$ sudo apt-get --fix-broken install

Should I open a separate bug? Or is it a consequence of (a combination)
of the current bugs? How should I fix it?

Cheers,

Alex

It's a totally different bug; please open a separate report.

Ben.

I've tried today running with Linux 6.10.6, and it works. I don't keep
an old kernel (neither of the ones with which I reported this bug), so
don't know what exactly fixed it, but my computer is working again with
the latest kernel, so I'm happy with it.

Feel free to close. Thanks!

Have a lovely day!
Alex

Ahh, sorry, it had been marked as "done". I hadn't received an email
about that. Ignore my previous message.

Cheers,
Alex

Same problem here,

First found the waiting for device problem making boot fail. Booting from an
older kernel image succeeded, but when upgrading kernel package I found
exact above problem.

Downgrading to testing initramfs-tools seems to help building the image (not
yet rebooted). Created image has size similar to that of working image. Note
that the image causing the "waiting for device problem" was remarkably
smaller.

Regards,
