Hello,

I have reopened this bug as this problem even shows on ppc64el again
with the latest netinst daily build downloaded from [1]. I have tested
the image on an IBM 8247-42L inside a PowerKVM virtual machine.

Removing the patch again fixes the problem for me. However, at least on
big-endian ppc64, debian-installer does not accept any keyboard input
after the language menu shows up.

So, either the system has crashed at this point or there is something
wrong with the input device.

Adrian

Here is a short video which demonstrates the hang:

This was reproduced using the following installation image:

Hello John,

Able to reproduce the issue, however isos from one year ago also
pointing that same issue.

Thanks and regards,

I could clearly fix the video console by dropping the extra patch that
Debian is carrying although I still ran into the problem that the
machine hang after debian-installer started.

This particular patch [1] breaks the console output extremely early so that
debian-installer doesn't even show.

I have also observed that while removing this patch makes debian-installer
load, it also seems to hang during language selection. I have not figured
out yet what the reason for this hang is.

Hey Adrian,

May I know which patches you have removed? Also, does installer hangs at
the time of language selection or before ?

Thanks and regards,

Aditi

As already mentioned, it's this patch [1] that broke the framebuffer.

> Also, does installer hangs at the time of language selection or before ?

The installer does not hang, there is just no video because of the framebuffer
problem. The core issue is that this change was made without properly testing
it on all affected targets which is why we're seeing the regression on PowerKVM
and PowerMac.

Thanks,
Adrian

Hi Ben,

could we modify the patch to apply the device name change on ppc64el only?

We could either trigger on "#if(_CALL_ELF == 2)" or "#ifdef __LITTLE_ENDIAN__":

I'm attaching an updated patch. Could you use this one instead?
