Message-ID<J3F4J-4jHo-7@gated-at.bofh.it>
Package: linux-image-6.1.0-23-amd64
Version: 6.1.99-1

Sometimes iwlwifi becomes unavailable on our Tuxedo laptops
running Debian's kernel 6.1.90, 6.1.94 or 6.1.99. The error message
in system log is

2024-07-23T09:14:59.386353+02:00 ppcl013 kernel: [ 18.191543] Intel(R) Wireless WiFi driver for Linux

We have to turn off the laptop for a few minutes to make it work
again. A reboot is not sufficient.

The path into this failure is still unknown, but an unclean shutdown
might be relevant here.

Hardware is

         Kernel driver in use: iwlwifi

We have upgraded the firmware to the most recent version 20240709 from kernel.org
(linux-firmware-upstream_20240709_all.deb, built using upstream's python script).
No improvement.

Installing 6.7.12 or 6.9.7 from the bookworm-backports repository seems to help.
We haven't had a single incident using these kernels on the Tuxedos.

Harri

Hi Salvatore,

is running the backports kernel supposed to be the official fix,
or will there be fixed 6.1 kernel for Bookworm as well?

I cannot say. If we find the fixing commit which make it work in the
versions you have tested, then this might be a candidate for
backporting to the 6.1.y stable series.

Now you know 6.7.12-1 fixes it, you migh first try to bisect the
Debian versions introducing the fix, and then within the upstream
versions do a bisect.

So it really depends on if we are able to identify the fix for your
reported issue.

Rgards,
Salvatore

Recently we have seen the "no config found" error for backports kernel
6.9.7 as well, ie the problem is not solved for newer kernels, either.
