Package: firmware-amd-graphics
Version: 20230515-3
Severity: important

In my particular case with the RX 7800 XT, I'm stuck with a 1024x768 resolution
on a 4K display.

The issue stems from missing firmware, as seen in dmesg (excerpt below).

Debian Testing and Sid has linux-firmware version 20230515. Firmware for the
new RDNA3/Navi31/RX 7000 series GPUs was first introduced on 2023-07-24, and
are first available in upstream version 20230804. Arch Linux provides linux-
firmware 20230804 and I can confirm the GPU works correctly there.

#81287 — Bug#1052714: Use upstream tarball from kernel.org

This reddit thread suggests using the latest firmware tarball from
kernel.org:
https://www.reddit.com/r/debian/comments/17umedg/fixed_amd_rx_7800_xt_gpu_on_debian_unstable/

A (more) frequently updated firmware-amd-graphics would be more
favorable, maybe also for stable-updates?

Best,

Christopher

Seconding the suggestion for more frequent firmware updates to
better align with the kernel packages.

Maybe these could be provided in experimental/rc-buggy?

I had a problem with my RX 7900 XT where it would reboot on resuming
from suspend, which was fixed by grabbing the latest amdgpu firmware
from the kernel tarball.

Greetings,
Markus

I'd also like to support this. The current firmware-amd-graphics is getting
close to being a year old. While of course the Stable branch won't get
up-to-date firmware as that's not the point of firmware, I don't see a
reason at least sid or an experimental branch shouldn't be kept more
up-to-date. And I don't really see a reason why that shouldn't be the case
for testing and stable-updates or stable-backports too.

E.g., a Ryzen 7040's iGPU can't be handled by the 06/2023 firmware package,
it will complain that "amdgpu/gc_11_0_1_me" couldn't be loaded. With at
least the 09/2023 firmware that's not an issue anymore.

Greetings,
Richard

I'd like to ping this issue.

Just installed a RX 7700 XT and needed to manually download a bunch of
firmware files from the upstream repo to get it to work. I am on unstable,

Is there anything a user (me) can do to help here? What is needed to get
this package up to date? I saw a little update in the git repo, but it
does not look like an update to a newer linux-firmware version?

Regards

   Andre
