You are running not running the latest version of the firmware package.
Can you try it with the latest version?
Updated package is now in the non-free-firmware archive area, so make sure
that's enabled in your sources.list.

The brcm/brcmfmac4356-pcie.bin file (f.e.) has been moved/renamed to cypress/
cyfmac4356-pcie.bin and *maybe* that causes the issue.

If you can access this file, could you try if it solves the issue?

Hi,

I don't have access, so I've tried to create an account... which failed on some internal error. Retrying to create an account then fails because the username (dkm) and/or email (dkm+salsa@kataplop.net) are already used (probably because of my initial try).

If there's no other way, I'll go ask on IRC for support with my account creation.

I'm 99% sure this would be a *workaround*, but let's verify anyway:
In the /lib/firmware directory, create a symlink from
brcm/brcmfmac4356-pcie.bin to cypress/cyfmac4356-pcie.bin

As expected, it works with the symlink :)

Thanks, then it's a kernel issue so I'm reassigning accordingly.

New development: I now think it *is* an issue in firmware-brcm80211.
I think it would still be good if the kernel would also check the `cypress`
directory, but this seems to be a packaging issue.

Via https://snapshot.debian.org/binary/firmware-brcm80211/ you can find
various old versions of the package, and I want you to do the following test:

1) First remove the symlink you created above.
2) Get the .deb for version 20230117-2 and install that
3) Reboot and verify that your wifi works as it should
4) If so, upgrade to the 20230210-1 version and reboot
5) verify that wifi is now broken

Let me/us know how that test goes.

it works as expected...

... and this breaks the wifi with module not finding the fw, as expected (same error message)

I still think the upstream kernel should do something with the 'new' use of
the cypress directory as I described in my mail to the ML(s).
But the cause for the breakage is actually a (Debian) packaging change and I'm
about to revert that ...

... as this was likely less of a 'workaround' and more a 'solution'.

I am now reasonably certain that that is indeed the issue.

I asked the reporter of the issue to create symlinks and that 'fixed' it:

AFAICT in drivers/net/wireless/broadcom/brcm80211/brcmfmac/ there is pcie.c
and firmware.[c|h] and it uses BRCMF_FW_DEFAULT_PATH (="brcm/") to construct
the location of the firmware files.

Now that several firmware files are stored in a different directory ('cypress')
and also have a different file 'prefix' ('cyfmac') the firmware files that are
stored in/moved to the cypress directory are no longer found.

Cheers,
  Diederik
