Dear Maintainer,

   * What led up to the situation?
I have bought a Lenovo ThinkPad T14s with TrackPoint and Touchpad from Elantech and I use the TrackPoint for daily business.

   * What exactly did you do (or not do) that was effective (or
     ineffective)?
Boot Debian testing hybrid image (live iso) from 2021-05-24 and started using the TrackPoint.

   * What was the outcome of this action?
TrackPoint jumps to the edge/corner of the screen after some minutes.

   * What outcome did you expect instead?
Using the TrackPoint without this jumpy experience.

Hi there,

I reported this bug because I spotted it in the current Debian testing
release. Though I think it's an issue which may still exist in the
current vanilla upstream. But since the TrackPoint is nearly useless
this way I'd hope to get a fix backported to the bullseye kernel.

There exists a bugzilla[0] on kernel.org dealing with this issue, too.

[0] https://bugzilla.kernel.org/show_bug.cgi?id=209167

Mark Pearson form Lenovo was able to reproduce this bug and is in
contact with Elantech. Further information might be available in a
bugzilla[1] for Fedora.

[1] https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=1964036

I hope these infos might help to get rid of this nasty bug.

Best regards,
Joerg

Would you be able to confirm that the patch provided by Oleg,
referenced solves the issue for you?

https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=1964036#c1

https://kernel-team.pages.debian.net/kernel-handbook/ch-common-tasks.html#s4.2.2

I guess so, and see you in the conversation, but asking explicitly
anyway.

Regards,
Salvatore

Hi,

Unfortunately I cannot confirm that. Because the patch doesn't seem to
cover all cases of jumps. Please see the following comment for reference.

https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=1964036#c5

So I still see jumps when running a patched kernel. Though I'm under the
impression there are fewer jumps than without the patch.

Please be aware that I don't have any sophisticated test procedure. I'm
just using the TrackPoint during my work on different tasks and don't
have any reproducible test pattern, yet.

I could run an unpatched kernel for an hour and count the jumps. Then
run the patched version and count the jumps to see if there is
significant difference. Would that help to decide whether it's worth to
include the patch as a workaround or not?

Regards,
Joerg

FYI this is the patch that got merged into the kernel maintainer's
branch yesterday:

https://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/dtor/input.git/commit/?id=be896bd3b72b44126c55768f14c22a8729b0992e

I've been testing it for a couple of hours and it works perfectly in
my laptop, no issues at all so far (compared to loss of sync several
times per minute without the patch).

I'm confused by your impression that there are fewer bugs because the
difference is night and day. The patch in the RedHat bugzilla checks
the firmware version before discarding the event, the patch in the
kernel doesn't, maybe that's the reason?

Anyway, I confirm that it works with the kernels in stable-backports
(5.14.9-2~bpo11+1), unstable (5.14.16-1) and experimental
(5.15.1-1~exp1).

This a quite annoying usability problem and affects all users of this
device (see e.g [1] and [2]) so I suggest its inclusion in the Debian
kernels.
