searching a good package firmware-amd-graphics that
supports AMD RX 6800 on testing .

actual testing package does not support this new card .

sid package breaks testing :
display manager no longer works (black screen)
recovery mode also no longer works
(also black screen and completely unusuable)

git firmware (amdgpu) gives no more results .
screen do not change at all and card isn't recognised no more .

i hope new testing firmware-amd-graphics will run correctly .

could you confirm ?

it seems that the uninstall of the sid package in testing
breaks the initramfs .

the amd package has too much files (more than 100 deb) .
i can't install the right ones and i don't know which to install ...

didn't "tested update-initramfs -u" on installing the package .

the use of the chroot in ubuntu saved me from the crash of my debian .
now i know how to find a little solution when debian breaks with
firmware-amd-graphics .

but the firmware is still wrong .

hope the new one will be better .

mixing distributions like this can result in an "if it breaks, you get
to keep the pieces and debug it on your own" scenario.

The graphics stack is made of up of packages from linux-source,
firmware, llvm-toolchain, mesa, and now the new vulkan stuff.  When
mixing distributions, it is the user's responsibility to ensure that the
mix of packages installed to the system doesn't result in a random and
broken state of incompatible versions.

With a supported distribution, test for GPU success, then if it doesn't
work, shutdown, reboot with ctrl+alt+del, add "nomodeset=1" to the
kernel cmdline, as root run "journalctl -k --boot=-1 | xz >
boot.log.xz", and attach that log to this bug.

If you're accessing the system using ssh, "journalctl -k | xz >
boot.log.xz" without a reboot, and send that log to this bug.

For this bug to be actionable, you'll need to make it reproducible on a
supported distribution.  This means using only bullseye/testing (testing
doesn't have new enough firmware-amd-graphics), or using unstable/sid.
Please take care to manually downgrade any packages installed from
experimental to their version in sid; however, note that package
downgrades are also not supported...

An easier option may be to create a minimal unstable/sid installation on
a USB stick, ensure firmware-amd-graphics 20201218-1 is installed, boot
from that, and test for a functional Linux framebuffer (with modesetting)
console, and provide logs to this bug report if this simple test fails.

on ubuntu 20.10, by adding the kernel 5.10 and the amdgpu folder of git, I
manage to make my graphics card work perfectly.

testing (maybe the old freeze), it was useful to me. some defective packages

Keep an eye on "nomodeset=1".  I noticed it was still activated in the
logs you sent (maybe those were logs from the wrong boot?  Maybe
/etc/default/grub was edited, but grub-update wasn't run, so these
changes weren't applied)

The line "[drm:amdgpu_init [amdgpu]] *ERROR* VGACON disables amdgpu
kernel modesetting" is a consequence of booting with "nomodeset=1" as a
kernel argument.  Sorry I didn't highlight that important detail to the
first step.  That might be a red herring though.  See my question to
Vincent below for more info.

It is likely you'll need to completely remove amdgpu-pro if you want to
use the Debian-provided drivers, because amdgpu-pro installs its own
firmware to a location that overrides firmware-amd-graphics'.  IIRC
amdgpu-pro installs to /lib/firmware/kernel-version/amdgpu, where
firmware-amd-graphics installs to /lib/firmware/amdgpu.

I hope it's not too frustrating that the BTS is English-only!

Thanks Vincent, yes, I just confirmed that CONFIG_DRM_AMD_DC_DCN3_0 is
missing from last week's linux-signed-amd64 (5.10.5+1)!  Presumably an
attempt to load the firmware isn't made unless PCI IDs match, and
without CONFIG_DRM_AMD_DC_DCN3_0 the amdgpu driver doesn't know about
the new PCI IDs?  If so, could you reassign this bug to the kernel
package?

Thank you for your help detecting that Debian did not yet support the
RX6800 (Navi2/BigNavi) series.  It appears the issue has been solved in
#980750.

To make use of that fix, wait a few days for the updated kernel package
to become available, allow it to upgrade, and take care to disable
"nomodeset" at that time, because (from your log)

  janv. 21 07:30:49 sid kernel: You have booted with nomodeset. This means
  your GPU drivers are DISABLED
  janv. 21 07:30:49 sid kernel: Any video related functionality will be
  severely degraded, and you may not even be able to suspend the system

I would like to thank you all for your help.

now, debian supports big navi graphics cards.

to start with, "navy21" cards are supported.
AMD RX 6800 /6800 XT /6900 XT
The 6700 and, perhaps, the 6500 are still to come.

With gcn3.0 support now enabled, it is likely that the RX 6x00 
generation will be fully supported.

remains a question : how did you know where the error came from ? and 
what to modify ?
