#65506 — Bug#943515: linux-image-5.2.0-3-amd64: Cannot resume from suspend

FromAnton Bobov <abobov@gmail.com>

SubjectBug#943515: linux-image-5.2.0-3-amd64: Cannot resume from suspend
Message-ID<yVbzr-45l-5@gated-at.bofh.it>
Package: src:linux
Version: 5.2.17-1
Severity: normal

After linux 5 I can't resume after suspend, my laptop remains is suspend mode
(the power button is slowly blinking because it's in suspend mode) and only way
to continue is to reboot. The old linux-image-4.19.0-5-amd64 works without
problems.

I found a couple similar issues with other Lenovo laptops, perhaps related to
some Thinkpad modules.

I have the same model and can't reproduce this.

Does this still happen if you remove the acpi_call module?

Ben.

Yes, I removed acpi_call module and can't resume from suspend.

I also done clean testing installation, with only main packages and standard
system utilities, no configuration at all.
Just boot and sudo systemctl suspend, and can't resume.

Hi Anton,

We tried here at Lenovo (using the same 5.2.17 testing stream) and weren't able to reproduce either I'm afraid. Let me know if you are able to narrow it down to something in particular.

We recently debugged a suspend-and-resume issue on the P1 Gen2 using hybrid graphics mode and in that case it was a link training issue in the i915 driver caused by a timeout being too short. It only happened on a system with an OLED screen and was 'introduced' 4.19.3 as that was when eDP link re-training was enabled (it is a timeout setting in the BIOS that is the problem, not the kernel code itself, but the code change triggered the issue). In that particular case on resume everything was working fine except the screen was blank (so you could ssh in to the system succesfully). We've only seen that issue on P1G2 so it's really unlikely it's the same thing your seeing - but just in case it's helpful.

Thanks
Mark

Hi Mark,

Thank you to point me in the right direction, I have solved my problem by
changing BIOS security configuration.

I have the security chip settings:
- Security Chip Selection = Intel PTT
- Security Chip = Enabled

I enabled Discrete TPM and now 5.2 kernel suspend and resume properly.

I also found this logs with Intel PTT:

tpm tpm0: Operation Timed out
tpm tpm0: Operation Timed out
tpm_crb: probe of MSFT0101:00 failed with error -62

The system does not have a network connection after suspend (can't ping), but
then I press Fn+ESC it toggle Fn led on and off (in normal condition no led are
on and Fn+ESC resume system).

Anton

Hi,

I'm experiencing the same issue, only with Debian-provided kernels since
version 5.2. It's affecting all versions packaged since.
My workaround is to compile the kernel from upstream, which works as expected
without any issue.

My laptop is a Thinkpad X260. If I disable the security chip or set it to
Discrete TPM, the issue disappears.
So, to me, it seems like something in Debian packaging related to TPM is
causing this issue.

My Thinkpad T460s was also affected (failing to resume from a suspend if
TPM2 is enabled), however upgrading from 1.49 --> N1CET82W (1.50 )
10/15/2020 seems to have solved the issue. There are references to TPM
sleep/wake issues in the ChangeLog, but only in previous versions:

     https://download.lenovo.com/pccbbs/mobiles/n1cuj37w.txt

# uname -r
5.10.0-4-amd64

To actually use the TPM2.0 I still have to set intel_iommu=off, see:
*
https://lore.kernel.org/lkml/26b328dc-2161-fdaa-f533-bf0027c13efc@redhat.com/
* https://bugzilla.kernel.org/show_bug.cgi?id=108251
...but I think that's a separate issue.

My Thinkpad X201s also shows similar symptoms, since Linux 5
suspend/resume only works the first time, the second time the firmware
crashes. In that case blacklisting the tpm module there seems to have
worked around it. It's not going to get any more BIOS updates in this
stage of it's life.

Cheers,
